"You can't do that. You just took your turn." Katie said to her younger sister, Madison. They were playing the game of Trouble, and her little sister was doing just that; causing trouble.
"No I didn't." Madison said, giving Katie a toothy grin.
"I think you did." Katie said sternly.
"Aw, it's just a game." Madison said.
"Yeah, but you should never cheat."
"Why?"
"Because it's mean." katie told her six year old sister. Her little brother nodded in agreement.
"Who's turn is it?" Melissa asked.
"It's Ben's turn." She said.
Ben nodded his head and pushed down on the button on the middle of the board.
"Help him." Melissa said from the couch. Ben didn't have enough strength to push the hard, plastic button all the way down. Katie leaned foward and pushed it down for him. Katie was just about to take her turn when the phone rang and Judy picked it up.
"Katie." Judy called from the kitchen.
"Oh, go ahead without me." She said, getting up from her place in front of the coffee table. She walked into the kitchen where Judy was preparing a lunch of macaroni and cheese for their last day of Christmas vacation.
"It's for you." Judy said from the counter, where she was mixing the cheese.
"Thanks." Katie said, grabbing the phone that sat on the counter. "Hello?"
She was greeted by silence at the end of the line. She felt her stomach drop as she listened and nervously twisted the phone cord in her hand. "Hello?" Silence. With that, she slammed the phone down on it's cradle.
"Who was that?" Judy asked, sensing something was up.
"No one." katie muttered, walking back to the living room. Judy frowned. Something was definitely strange with that. She had seen the same thing happen a few weeks earlier, but she hadn't said anything to Katie. She was about to pick up the phone and star 69 when it rang again.
She grabbed the phone. "Hello?"
"Hi. Katie there?" Nicole asked. Judy let out a sigh of relief. "Just a second."
"Katie!" Judy called. Katie appeared a few moments later, a questioning look on her face.
"Nicole." Judy said, watching Katie's face. She immediately relaxed and picked up the phone.
"Hello?....yeah....okay....wait a sec, I wanna take this in my room." She said.
"Hang this up when I get up there, okay?" She asked Judy. She ran up to her room, turned on the phone, then when Judy had hung up, she flopped on her bed. "So what's up?"
"Oh my gosh. You have no idea..."
"Then tell me silly." Katie said.
"Adam took me to this skatepark with some of his friends...oh my gosh, it was so much fun." Nicole said excitedly.
"Sounds cool. How was he?"
"Oh, he was sooooo sweet. He had a car, and he drove me home, and when we got to my house, he leaned over and we frenched." She said.
Katie laughed. "Nicole! You just met this guy a few days ago!" She said.
"I know..." Nicole said. Katie could almost see her grinning.
"I would smack a guy if I only knew him a week and he frenched me." Katie said.
"Well I'm not you." Nicole said.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Nicole sighed. "I didn't mean it bad, it's just that you tend to be a little....slower than me when it comes to guys."
Katie huffed. She knew her friend was right. "Well...that's just...how I do things."
"Yeah, and it works for you, so no complaints, right?"
"I guess." katie said. The two girls were silent for a moment.
"I didn't mean it bad. "
"I know..." Katie said. "It's no big deal. You're right, anyway." She said.
"Katie...You okay? You sound kinda weird." Nicole said.
"Um...yeah, I'm okay."
"Does it have to do with Zac?"
Katie sighed. She really didnt' want to get into the whole thing just then. "No, not really."
"Well then what's wrong?" Nicole asked.
"Well....I got a phone call today." She said.
"Phone call?"
"Yeah...you know, the weird ones?"
"Oh yeah."
"I think it's more than just a prank, Nicole."
"I think it is too."
"I don't know what to do about it though."
"You should do something." Nicole said.
"Yeah, but what would I do? I mean, they can't do much if it's just a prank caller."
"They could trace it back." Nicole said.
"But they could be calling from a pay phone." Katie pointed out.
"I guess....well, I don't know what you should do."
"Neither do I....and it's really scaring me. I wish I knew who it was."
"I wish I did too. That's really sick."
"Uh huh." Katie said. "I don't even know who would be doing it. That's what makes it freaky. I mean, it literally could be anyone."
