Zac looked at the phone. It wouldn't be considered a date, would it? He wasn't sure. He picked up the phone, then set it back down. Should he do it? Taylor and a bunch of his friends were going dirtbiking that day, just two days after Christmas. They were going to trailer their bikes out in the country and ride for the day, since it was unseasonably warm and sunny.
Taylor offered Zac to bring Katie, since she had always wanted to try dirtbiking. However, that was before they broke up, and now things were different. It was strange to him. He had known that he wanted to get back into Katie's life, but he hadn't been sure how he would do it.
He had just started hanging around her, and he saw her at school every day, which made it easier. Things weren't that same as they had been, that was for sure, but they were a heck of a lot better. She would talk to him now, and she had even called him a few times. Gut instinct told him that she did want to be more than friends with him, but sometimes the way she acted around him told him otherwise. He shook his head and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" She picked up.
Zac froze for a moment. "Hi." He said.
"Hi Zac." She said. "What's up?"
"Um...what are you doing today?" He asked.
"Uh....not much, why?" She asked.
"Because I was wondering if you wanted to go dirtbiking with me and Tay and a bunch of other people." He said.
"Dirtbiking?" She asked.
"Yeah, you always said you wanted to go." He said.
"Um....sure. Why not?" She laughed.
"You can invite Nicole." He said.
"Oh...okay." She said.
"Well, Adam is coming, so I figured she would like to hang out with him." He said.
Katie laughed. "Yeah, I think she would too."
"Great. Meet me at my house at one." He said.
"OKay...I'll be there." She said.
"Morgan is going too." Zac said.
"She is?"
"Yeah, Tay already asked her."
"Okay. See you then." She said.
"Okay." Zac said.
"Bye."
"Bye."
"So you're not going to get back together with her?" Adam asked Zac as they stood in the driveway.
"I dunno." Zac said with a shrug.
"Why did you break up?" He asked.
Zac sighed. "Long story."
"Ah." Adam said with a nod. "One of those."
Zac laughed weakly. "Yeah."
"So what do you think your chances are?" Adam asked.
"See, I don't know. She goes hot and cold, ya know?"
"Been there." Adam said knowingly.
"And so I've just decided to wait."
"Ah."
"I don't think she would date another guy, and I'm sure as hell not interested in anybody else." Zac said, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"Really? Wow, that's detication." Adam said with a laugh.
"Yeah." Zac said, kicking at the gravel in his driveway with his shoe.
"So you're not going to push it?"
"Nope." Zac said. "Hopefully she'll make the first move."
"Well, today may be a good day." He said.
Zac laughed. "Well, that really depends on her mood, not my enthusiasam." And unfortunately, that was true.
"This will be so much fun!" Nicole squealed.
"Yeah." Katie agreed as Morgan pulled up in the Hanson's driveway at one.
"Have either of you ever been on a dirtbike?" Morgan asked.
"No." The two girls said in unison.
"It's a rush." Morgan said, pulling her keys out of the ignition.
The girls got out, and walked up to where a bunch of guys were standing next to a truck with a trailer hooked on the back.
"Hey." Nicole said, walking up to where Zac and Adam were standing.
"Hey." Adam greeted her.
"You ready?" Zac asked Katie.
"Yup." She said. She stuck her hands in the back pocket of her jeans and looked around. Zac watched her. She looked amazing. She had on simple brown boots, loose fitting jeans, a green shirt, a flannel jacket on over it, and her hair was pulled back into a pony tail. It was her simplicity that made her look so appealing, Zac decided.
"You're gonna have a blast." Adam said to the two girls.
"Let's hope so." Nicole said coyly.
Adam laughed, and Zac and Katie exchanged knowing glances.
"You guys ready?" Taylor asked them.
"Yup." Zac answered for the group. "You get my bike loaded?" He asked.
"Yeah, Chris got it." Taylor said.
With that, they loaded into a few different utility vehicles and headed out to the country. Zac ended up sitting inbetween Nicole and Adam. He looked wistfully at Katie who was sitting against the side, looking out the window as the scenery rushed by.
