By the time one rolled around, Katie was ready. Well, she was more than ready. She had been ready for half an hour. They had just picked up Nicole.
"This weather is murder on my hair." Nicole griped, trying to comb it back into place with her fingers.
"Oh, you look fine." Katie said, looking out the window for the mall. She didn't know why she was so nervous, for Nicole was right there with her.
"Are you really nervous?" Nicole asked her.
"No."
"Well, you should be."
"What?" Katie said.
"Ian is hot."
"So?" Katie said.
"Well, I was just saying…" Nicole trailed off.
"What?" Katie prodded.
"Don't screw this up." Nicole said bluntly.
"Gee, thanks."
"I'm interested to see who he brought for me." Nicole said.
"Why?"
"Well, I haven't gone out with anyone since March, and I want to get another boyfriend."
"Nicole it's just one date."
"I know, but you never know what one date can turn into.
"Oh, I guess." Katie said. She looked down at her outfit. Loose jeans, and a light yellow tank top. She dressed comfortably for the movies, not knowing what was going to happen.
"Okay, we're here." Judy said.
"Thanks Judy." Katie said as they jumped out.
"The movie theatre's door is over here." Nicole said, guiding Katie through the rain to the entrance. They got inside, and Nicole put her umbrella in her purse. They looked for Ian, and immediately spotted him. He turned around, saw them, and walked over.
"Hey, you guys, glad you're here." He said.
"Hey." They said.
"Um, let's go over here and decide on a movie, they all start here in a minute." He said, leading them towards the counter.
"Oh, you have to meet your 'date', Nicole." Ian said with a smile."
"Oh, okay." She said happily, following him. "Here he is." He said, patting a boy on the shoulder. He turned around, and Nicole's mouth dropped open.
"Zac?" She said.
"Nicole?"
"What are you doing here?" She asked.
"Ian said I was supposed to tag along to double date, but I didn't know it would be you." He said, looking over to see Katie.
"Katie? You were the girl he asked out?"
"Yeah…Ian, Zac is your buddy?" Katie asked.
"Yeah, that's him." Ian said.
"I had no idea." Nicole said.
"Me either." Katie said.
"Me either." Zac echoed.
"Is this okay with everyone?" Ian asked.
The three looked at each other, then nodded slowly.
"Okay, then let's go pick a movie." He said, heading towards the menu.
Once they had gotten their popcorn and drinks, they selected a movie and sat down. It went Nicole, Zac, Katie, and Ian. Katie couldn't have felt more uncomfortable, but she didn't say anything, since the movie was starting. She caught Nicole's eye, and gave her a look of nervousness, and Nicole just gestured towards Zac and rolled her eyes.
They walked out of the theater, and Katie had to admit, she didn't really know what movie had played. Truthfully, none of them did. Nicole had been busy trying to watch what Katie and Ian did, and Ian was watching Katie, and Katie was watching Zac and Nicole, and Zac was nearly giving himself a heart attack by watching Ian.
Every time Ian would try and make a move, Zac would cough or ask him to get more popcorn. Katie had to admit, she didn't really want him to make a move just yet, but then again it was no business of Zac's.
"Well, that was interesting." Ian said, looking annoyed at no one in particular.
"Uh huh." Nicole said.
"I liked it." Zac said, shoving his hands in his pocket.
All three just looked at him.
"Um, there's Judy, Katie, we had better go." Nicole said, sensing the awkwardness.
"Yeah, that's her, um, thanks for the movie guys." She said.
Ian suddenly leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. "Actually, I paid for the movie, but…" He just smiled. Zac gave him a look of awe, and Nicole just watched. He looked over at her, and she just shrugged.
Katie sort of smiled back, looked at Zac, then went outside in the rain to the car.
"Well." Nicole said when they were finally in and seated.
"Well what?"
"That was very interesting." Nicole said.
"Yes it was."
"Why was it so interesting?" Judy said.
"It's a long story." Katie said.
"I agree." Nicole replied, looking out the window.
"Well did you have a good time?" Judy asked, looking at them from the rear view mirror.
"Yeah." They both said, shrugging.
"Well then why was it so interesting?" Judy asked, now very confused.
"It just was." Katie said, watching the rain pour down the windows.
They dropped off Nicole and then headed home. When they pulled in the garage, Katie got out and she and Judy walked inside.
"Thanks for the ride." Katie said as she went upstairs to her room.
"No problem." Judy said, still confused.
Katie went into her room, and saw that it was nearly four. She already didn't have anything to do, so she pulled out her journal and wrote away as the rain poured down outside.
Dear Journal,
Today Ian and Zac took me and Nicole to the movies since it was so nasty out. I can't believe what happened. We picked one to watch, and I honestly can't tell you what was playing. I don't think anyone else could either. We were so busy just watching each other no one even paid attention to the movie. In fact, I think that was the last thing on our minds.
A funny thing happened. After the movies, we were all out in front by the doors, and we were saying good-bye, and Ian kissed me. Not a real kiss, just one on the cheek, and I have to admit, it felt good. I know Nicole wants me to hook up with Zac, but Ian is sooo cute, and I really think he likes me. Zac, well, I can never tell what he's thinking.
With that, she shut her journal, and watched the rain pour down. She soon got bored with that too, so she went over to Morgan's room to see what she was up to. She put her hand on the knob, but then remembered to knock as Morgan was trying to teach her.
"Come in." She heard her say from the inside.
Katie swung the door open, and waded through the clothes and trash until she was over to where Morgan was sitting, typing away at the computer.
"What are you typing?" She asked.
"A reply letter to Taylor." She said, not bothering to look up.
"Oh." She said, looking around the room. Her eyes fell on a vase of about twelve huge sunflowers.
"Where did you get those?" She asked.
Morgan looked at what she was talking about. "Oh, those came while you were gone. They're from Taylor." She said, a smile tracing her lips.
"Oh." Katie said.
"yeah. Aren't they pretty." She said, reaching over to touch one."
"They're beautiful." She said. "What the occasion?"
"He just sent them to say he was sorry for what happened last night." Morgan said, going back to her typing.
"That was sweet of him." Katie said.
"I know, wasn't it, though?"
"Yeah." She said. "You're always on that computer."
"I know. I like it. You have one too." She said.
"I know, I forgot about that. Where are they?" Katie asked.
"I think they're still in the storage room. We're only using three of them." Morgan said.
"Who's got the third?" She asked.
"Krista set one up in her room last week, I know that, and we have one downstairs."
"Oh. I think I might go get one." Katie said.
"Go for it." Morgan said, looking up at her.
"Okay. Thanks." Katie said, walking out of the room. Morgan just continued clacking away.
One of Carol's business friends worked for IBM, and had given them five new IBM computers for Christmas that year, but no one had opened them until last week, when Morgan discovered them.
Katie went downstairs, through the kitchen, and down into the basement, where they had a large storage room. She went through some boxes, before finding one with IBM logos all over it. She dragged one out, and managed to haul it up to her bedroom. She plopped it down on her bed, and cleared some space on her desk.
An hour later, she finally got it to start, after messing with the cords and wires for awhile. She turned it on, and picked up her phone to call Nicole.
"Hello?" Nicole answered.
"Hey. It's me." Katie said.
"Oh hey. What's up?"
"Oh, I set up my computer. What's your screen name?" She asked.
"It's Nicole8737. My e-mail is that too." She said.
"Okay, cool, lemme get mine set up, then I'll e-mail you."
"Okay." She said.
"It might take me awhile."
"That's fine. Say, what are you going to do about Ian?" She asked.
"I don't know. I mean, I really like him and everything, but I don't know. I don't really know him or anything…"
"True. Well, I'll let you think about it, but I was talking to his sister online and she said that he said that he really likes you."
"Where do you find all this out?" Katie asked, now bewildered.
"I just have my sources."
"Okay, whatever."
"See ya later."
"Okay, bye."
