"Oh my god!" Zac exclaimed.
"What?" Taylor asked.
"It's almost seven and you're not even out of the shower yet!" Zac said to his brother. He was standing outside the bathroom door, and it seemed like he was taking forever.
"I am too." Talor said, emerging with a towel wrapped around his waist.
"Finally." Zac said.
"How much time do you need? Sheesh." Taylor said.
"Enough." Zac said, slamming the bathroom door shut.
"God, you've taken long enough." Taylor said, standing in the doorway once Zac was out and had a towel wrapped around his waist.
"What?" Zac asked him. "So I take pride in my apprearence?" He asked.
Taylor watched his younger brother carefully wash his face and dry it.
"Wait, you're not going to shave?" He asked.
"Shave?" Zac asked. "Should I?"
"Well, gee, lemme think." Taylor asked, leaning against the doorway. "You're going out on your first real date with your new girlfriend who you've had the hots for since the first second you saw her. Gee, Zac, I dunno." Taylor said, walking into the bathroom.
"But I don't shave." Zac said. Taylor reached over and felt his younger brothers face. He tossed him a can of shaving cream.
"You do now." Taylor said.
"You gotta help me, Tay."
"Okay." He said, putting a razor on the counter of the sink.
"I've never done this, and I'm sure as hell not going to go tonight with my face all sliced up." Zac said.
"I understand." Taylor said.
"Good."
"Hey, at least you didn't have Ike and Dad showing you." Taylor said as Zac sprayed some shaving cream into his palm. He slapped it on his face and rubbed it around.
Taylor laughed. "You put on too much you goon. You don't want to slip and cut your lip off." He said with a laugh, grabbing a towel and wiping some of it off.
"You gotta tell me these things." Zac said. Fifteen minutes later, they were finally finished. Zac had done most of it, but Taylor had had to help him around his chin.
"Thanks Tay." Zac said.
"No prob. Now I expect you to forever treasure that experience." Taylor said.
"Um, okay." Zac said, walking over to his closet.
"What do I wear?" He asked.
"I dunno." Taylor said, pulling on jeans.
"You're wearing jeans?" He asked.
"Well, yeah."
"No no no, we gotta go in style." Zac said.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm just saying, if we're going out on the town, we need to be dressed for it." Zac said.
"Um, okay." Taylor said.
"Wear these." Zac said, throwing him a pair of khaki colored curdoroys.
"okay." He said.
"And this." he said, handing him a short sleeved dark blue shirt.
"Geez, what is this, house of style?" he asked.
"No, I just want to look decent."
"I guess." taylor said, pulling on the pants.
"Now what should I wear?" Zac asked.
He picked out gray pants and a maroon v-neck t-shirt. "How's this?" he asked.
"Since when do you have fashion sense?" Taylor asked, brushing out his hair.
"I dunno." Zac said. "Say, You got any cologne?" Zac asked as he tied his Doc Martens.
"Yeah." Taylor said, walking over to thier dresser. "Old spice or sport?" He asked.
Zac pondered this. "Old spice."
"Good choice." taylor said, tossing him the bottle. "Classic also."
"yeah. Can't go wrong." Zac said.
He dabbed a little on, then stood up to brush his hair one last time. he had decided to leave it down for Katie that night.
"Are we ready?" Taylor asked.
"I guess." Zac said.
"okay."
Zac stopped. "Tay, I feel nervous." He said.
"What?" taylor asked, poking his head back in the room.
"I'm nervous."
"Don't be." taylor said, walking back into the room.
Zac just smiled shakily.
"Just be polite and a gentleman, Zac. You can't go wrong." He said.
"Okay." he said unsurely. Was he ready for this?
They walked down to the garage and got into their father's jeep wrangler. They had convinced him that he didn't need it that night, and that they would be careful. To their delight, he had agreed.
By the time they picked up the girls, Zac had calmed down a little. He and Taylor walked up to their front porch and Taylor rang the doorbell. Judy opened the door.
"Hi." She said.
"Hi." They said.
"I understand you boys are gonna take out the girls." She said, looking the both in the eye. She blew out a cloud of cigarette smoke and took another drag. She tucked her black hair behind her ears and looked down at Ben, who had himself wrapped around her leg.
"Yeah." Taylor said, shifting uncomfortably.
"Well." She said, breaking into a smile. "Have fun and have them home by twelve." She said, smacking Taylor and Zac playfully on the shoulder.
"Judy, are you terrorizing them?" Morgan said with a laugh, coming up behind Judy."
"No. Course not." Judy said.
"Hi guys." Morgan said, walking out the door. Zac felt his stomach tighten. He smiled when he saw Katie. She was wearing a light green skirt with little flowers all over it with a green cardigan. She was wearing her hair up in a ponytail, and she looked very pretty. She walked out the door and onto the porch.
"Hi." She said.
"Hi." He said, his voice cracking a little.
She smiled, then looked at her feet.
"You guys ready?" Taylor asked, looking over at them.
"Yeah." Zac said. They all walked out to the driveway and got into the car. Taylor turned up the radio on the way there so they wouldn't have to do much talking, and the trip to the movie theater was short anyway.
"We're seeing the horror one, right?" Taylor asked as they stood in line to pay for their tickets.
"Yup." Morgan said.
"Well somebody's brave today." Taylor commented, paying for their tickets.
"What?"
"Oh, little miss I-can't-keep-watching-this-movie-can-we-go-out-in- the- lobby." He said with a smirk.
Zac just smiled at Katie. he saw her pull out her wallet, and he caught her hand. "My treat." He said.
"Zac, I can pay for my own movie." She said.
"Yeah, but we're on our first official date...this is special, so it's my treat." He said, handing over his money. "Two, please." he said.
She smiled at him, then they followed Taylor and Morgan over to the concession. Zac was acting very mature; he wasn't making strange noises or reffering to himself third person, and he had even opened two doors for her already.
Zac ended up buying popcorn and sodas for the two of them, once again claiming that this was a special date.
They all found seats together in the somewhat crowded theater, and sat down to wait for the movie.
"Thanks for paying Zac." She said.
"No problem."
"You know, you didn't have to do that." She said.
"I know, but like I said, this is special." He said.
The movie started, and he leaned back in his seat. He looked over at Katie a few minutes later to see her intently staring at the screen. She smiled at him. Zac leaned over to her. "You know, you look really pretty tonight." He said.
"You don't look so bad yourself." She said, looking him up and down. He smiled, then turned his attention back to the movie. Halfway through the movie, Zac started to get bored. katie still seemed pretty intent with it, but he had figured it out already. He saw that her hand was resting on her thigh. He was feeling lucky, he decided.
He slowly slid his hand over to hers and grabbed it, enertwining her fingers with his. SHe jumped, then smiled a few seconds later. She smiled at him, then turned her attention back to the movie. After awhile, he got bored again, and started tickling her fingers. She would squeeze his hand, then smile, not taking her eyes off the screen.
Whenever the killer came on, she would jump and squeeze his hand again.
"You scared?" He whispered.
"No." She said.
"You jump everytime something happens." He said.
"I do not." She said with a smile.
"You do too." He said in a silly voice.
Katie giggled, then was shushed by her sister, who was intently watching the movie. Katie and Zac both laughed, then continued watching.
When the movie finally ened, they exited the theater and walked outside.
"We'll go get the car if you guys want wait here." Taylor said, taking Morgn by the hand.
"Ok." Zac said. They watched Morgan and Taylor walk into the parking lot. Zac looked over at Katie and wrapped an arm around her waist. She smiled at him, then turned to lean on his chest.
"So what'd you think of the movie?" He asked.
"It was pretty good." She said. "Though I think it would have been better if you would have let me watch it." She said with a laugh.
"Aw, it was so predictable." he said. "We'll rent it when it comes out this fall." He said.
