Katie awoke the Satuday morning to her phone ringing. She had gotten it hooked up a few nights ago, and she already regretted it. Even in the mornings, it would ring with people looking for her mother or one of her sisters or even Judy. She sighed. Maybe someone else would get it. But it rang, and rang, and rang. She looked at her clock; almost eleven.
"ISn't anybody up?" She said to herself. Then she picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
"KATIE!" Nicole screamed.
"What? OW!" She said, pulling the phone away from her ear.
"Why didn't you tell me?" She shrieked.
"Tell you?"
"Yes!"
"Tell you what?" Suddenly it hit her. Oh no! Nicole had found out about Ian.
"What? WHAT? I'll tell you what; Ian asked you out two days ago, and you haven't even bothered to at least call him?"
"Well-"
"ARe you nuts?"
"No, just let me explain..."
Over the next half hour, Katie explained the whole story to a fuming Nicole.
"And that's why i got so mad at Zac yesterday at the park." Katie finished, taking a deep breath.
"Katie, Ian would be perfect for you."
"Well.."
"He called me this morning, and told me that he asked you out, and he even sent you ROSES, and you don't even talk to him for four whole days, and he thinks you really dislike him. That's not even fair, Kate."
"I know..." She said. "But i just didn't know what to do. No one has ever done that for me."
"Yeah, i guess it would be a little awkward." Nicole said.
"It was, believe me." katie said, remembering her phone conversation with Zac.
"Well, remember to be at my house at seven, because we are going to that dance." Nicole said firmly.
"Oh yeah." katie said. She had forgotten about that.
"Well, don't." Nicole said. "That's important, Katie."
"Okay."
"You'll have fun."
"You don't know that."
"Yes I do."
"Uh huh."
"Katie..."
"I'm not convinced."
"You are so difficult, you know that?" Nicole said with a laugh.
"Yes, I know."
"Just be here."
"Nicole, tell me the truth."
"What?"
"Will Ian be there?"
"Most likely, yes."
"Wait, I have another question."
"What?"
"Will Zac be there?"
"Most likely." Nicole said with a sigh.
"Well, ok."
"See you at seven."
"Okay."
"Do yourself a favor; get some sun."
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" Katie said.
"Nothing." Nicole said.
"Oh."
"Bye."
"Bye." Katie said, then hung up the phone.
She got up a few minutes later, then went into the bathroom. She washed her face, then put on some jeans and a tank top. Katie went out of her room still in bare feet and went downstairs to get some breakfast.
The last four days had been extrememly boring. All Katie had done was babysat and hung around the house, mastering the games on her computer. She had been dreading Saturday, when she would have to go to the dance.
It seemed like fun, but then again, Katie wasn't up for much. She was mad at Zac and scared of Nicole, and she didn't even know how to feel about Ian. He had been calling her house at least three times a day for the past couple of days, but she didn't know what to do, so she just kept ignoring the phone.
"Hello, sleepy head." Madison said from the kitchen table.
"Yo." Katie said, still tired.
"You have got to start getting into bed earlier." Judy said, picking little Ben out of his highchair.
"Oh."
"Yeah. So tell me, Miss Social, what are you plans for today?"
"Um, I'm going to sit around this morning, then go to Nicole's at seven, then go to a dance at a rec center at eight."
"Sounds fine." Judy said.
"Yeah." katie said, grabbing a bananna.
"Well, if you're going to sit around today, Krista and Melissa wanted to go to the mall this afternoon. Do you want to join us?" Judy asked.
"Um, yeah."
"Well we're leaving in a few minutes, and you're welcome to go."
"Okay, i think i will."
"But if you're going out in public with me, you're gonna have to do something with that hair." Judy said with a grin.
"AAARHHH!!!" Katie said. "Why do people keep telling me to do soemthing with myself?" She asked, rubbing her face. She walked back upstairs and told herself that judy didn't look much better. She walked into her bathroom and brushed her hair, looking at it. It wasn't that bad, she told herself. It was blonde, and long, almost to the middle of her back, thick, and was naturally curly like Madison's, but she had been keeping it straight the last few months.
She threw it in a knot at the nape of her neck, dug in her closet for her sandals, and then walked back downstairs. Judy saw her, and smiled. katie just glared.
