Chapter 1
Resting his arms on the penthouse balcony railing, Nick looked over the New York skyline and sighed. He couldn’t understand why he wasn’t happy. In all honesty, he should be one of the happiest guys in the world, his life practically taken from a fairy tale. A year before, he along with Brian, AJ, Kevin and Howie had decided to give the Backstreet Boys a rest, taking a very long overdue break. They knew that they were suffering from burnout and figured that if they took a break from it all, distanced themselves from the band and the hype, it just might be possible to salvage the group as well as their friendships. So 12 months ago they all went their own separate ways. Kevin went to LA with Kristin so that he could work on Just Within Reach and she could focus on her acting career. Brian went home to Atlanta and practically disappeared with Leighanne, starting their family. AJ spent time here and there, not really staying still long enough for Nick to get a constant phone number to keep in contact, and Howie went home to focus his time on his real estate and clubs. Out of everyone, the only one Nick constantly kept contact with was Howie. When the group went their separate ways, Nick found himself in New York wanting to do Broadway. He still wanted to sing, but he wanted to be able to do something that would garner him some respect. He wanted to show the world that Nick Carter was more than just the youngest member of the Backstreet Boys. So he auditioned for Broadway and within a few weeks found himself on one of the hottest plays to hit Broadway in ages.
A year later here he was. Standing on his balcony looking over New York city wondering why he wasn’t happy. Their CD sales were still going strong, his career was bursting and he had everything that he ever could want, except one thing. Someone to share that with. Since he’d been in New York he’d met many people, but no one that he wanted to start a relationship with. Nick had started to wonder if it was him, if he just wasn’t the kind of person that you loved. Yeah, women and men loved coming home with him and spending the night, but they always left the next morning with a smile and a promise to call. Just as he was about to sit down on the chair he kept outside, Nick heard the phone ring and made his way inside to answer it.
"Hello?"
"Nicky, how are you bro?" Howie’s voice came through the receiver.
"Same old D. How are you? You sound frazzled." Nick sat down, making himself comfortable.
"Ummm yeah. Have you heard from Kev? Has he called you?" Hearing this question Nick sat up straight, wondering what was going on. He hadn’t heard from Kevin since the group split and he didn’t know why Howie thought that Kevin would call him.
"What’s going on D? Why would Kevin call me? Is everything okay?"
"I don’t know Nick. Brian just phoned me and asked if I’d heard from him. They usually talk at least once a week and Brian hasn’t heard from him in almost two weeks. When he phoned Kristin to see where he was, Kristin had only told him that Kevin left."
And suddenly Nick’s heart was in his throat. It wasn’t like Kevin to just go off somewhere and not tell anyone where he was going. He was always anal about someone always knowing where you were in case something happened. "What are we going to do?"
"Well what can we do Nick? Just wait until we hear something from him. If he’s been gone for 2 weeks we wouldn’t even know where to start looking."
"Well D, I’ll let you know if I hear something, but I’m probably the last person he’ll contact. I haven’t spoken to him in over a year, and we weren’t talking long before the group split. I’m not exactly his favourite person bro." Nick said, feeling the sadness at how true that statement was. He couldn’t remember when things got so bad between him and Kevin, but they had and he didn’t think they’d ever be able to be friends again. Sighing, Nick finished his conversation with Howie and hung up the phone, silently praying that wherever Kevin was that he was okay.
