Popstar! November 2001

Watching your fave shows, all those characters on your TV screen are tiny, colorful specks that make you happy, make you sad and, above all else, make you care about made up storylines invented by creative writers.

But watching Making the Band, those "characters" were real guys, and all the good stuff had to be cut out just to fit into half hour weekly segments. In real life, the guys are huge personalities with oversized talent.

Join Popstar! on an exclusive pictoral tour of O-Town's private home, the place you saw 24/7 on Making the Band and the place where they rest their heads (well, every once in a while).

Along with crashing one of their rare mornings off, Popstar! dragged some fun quotes outta them about their tastes in movies, music and TV.

Popstar!: You guys seem so grounded here at home.

Dan: We are grounded. We don't feel like babies anymore. We were rookies when we first started and now we feel like we've grown up a lot.
But also, we're just chill because we slept in! We answered the door and they were like, "Hey, the Popstar! people are here." I was just waking up-I was in my underwear, so I was like, "Oh, really?"

What's changed about you since you were chosen to be in O-Town?

Trevor: I think the only change is that I'm in the band now. [Laughs] I'm still the same way. I still get completely shocked at everything that's happening. I'm so overwhelmed with everything that's going on. I don't think I've changed at all.
I think we've gotten smarter as a group and making decisions as a group, that are going to better or worsen our career-we're much better at that now. We can actually have input into decisions that people are making for us.

Maybe it's just because we're in your house, but you guys seem so unself-conscious. Is that from being filmed 24/7?

Trevor: When it comes to taking pictures and stuff, we are. When it comes to approaching women, I'm very self-conscious. I'm very shy. I'm so bad at it. I don't know what to say [Laughs].

What parts of yourself are you confident about?

Erik-Michael: My genuine attitude, my genuine way of looking at things, would probably be the best thing out of everything that I have.

Trevor: I'm just shy about the whole way I look. "What if she thinks I'm ugly?" I'm just self-conscious about it. I don't know what I'm really confident about. I'm really confident if I can get her in a dance club and start dancing. That's what I'm confident about.

You guys have had girls approach you, including nutso fans who've shown up on your doorstep. What's your craziest fan encounter?

Ashley: I still think pretty crazy to me was the girl who won the "Making the Fan" contest with the tattoo. That was pretty crazy. I've got to say the tattoo.

Dan: I wouldn't even tattoo O-Town on my back. [Laughs]

Erik-Michael: It would have to be Malaysia. Malaysia was crazy. I won't even tell you the stuff that they did over there because I don't want to start a riot over there. They're pretty intense and they like to show their fan appreciation, their appreciation for the group.

Jacob: We love the fans, but our privacy is gone. Not from them-we're taking pictures, we're doing interviews, we're doing stuff for J Records, we're doing stuff for a TV show, we're doing stuff stuff for a video, we're recording, we're promoting. We're just caught up in eight companies pulling us off in opposite directions. That's the hardest part.
But I think just think teaching people and at the same time entertaining them through television and music and everything is good opportunity for this band.

Fans like personal stuff, don't they? Like have you noticed when you say liked something in an interview, you start getting it in the mail?

Dan: [Laughs] How could you not notice? It's very funny. Trevor mentioned that he liked Mint Milano cookies in an interview and he got millions of Mint Milano cookies. It's so funny. We joke about it all the time. We don't expect gifts from anybody-at least I don't. It's just cool that they're buying our music. That's the cool thing for me-that would be the gift for me. I don't need all the other stuff. Everything else I can get for myself...but I appreciate the thought!

You're almost never here at home, right?

Erik-Michael: True. Europe and places are cool, but there's nothing like the good ole US of A. We did have a blast going to London and then heading to South Africa and all of the Asian countries.

Do you create when you have down-time at home?

Jacob: Yeah-I have a writing book that the same person that "Take Me Under" is about actually gave me for my birthday one year. I don't force it. I always write when there's a mood to write. It's usually when you're upset or when your emotional peak is at its highest, whether it's sad, mad or happy, that's when you write the most. When you're happy, I can't get myself to settle down to write.
You just have to be in the right mood. I try to force the mood and try to write a little bit everyday, whether it's four lines in a poem, four lines in a song or just a melody, just so you don't get out of the habit. The majority of the writing happens when I'm at an emotional peak. I have to just let it out on paper-I can't tell anybody.

Do you think you guys have more of an "edge" than most so-called boy bands?

Erik-Michael: Yeah, and that's what we pride ourselves on, having some sort of edge. We're so different between each other and from different places-our rooms here reflect that.
I think the group has a lot of depth and our album reflects that. We're not trying to be big stars, we're just trying to have big hearts.

O-Town Survey

FAVE GROUP:

Trevor: From now until I die, my favorite group will be Boyz II Men.
Ashley: Third Eye Blind
Erik-Michael:Boyz II Men
Dan: I've been listening to 112 a lot. I like their new CD. But...Jackson 5!
Jacob: DC Talk.

FAVE MALE SINGER:

Trevor: Brian McKnight.
Ashley: Michael Jackson.
Erik-Michael: I have a bunch.
Dan: It's a new guy who came out-his name is Craig David. [We asked Dan this way back when, so he was really ahead of the trend!_Ed] But Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder are my all-times.
Jacob: Michael Jackson.

FAVE FEMALE:

Trevor: Jessica Andrews.
Ashley: Whitney Houston.
Erik-Michael: Mariah.
Dan: Whew! I'm a big fan of Janet. But when it comes to singing stuff and music, I'm a big fan of Lauryn Hill. Her album was one of the best albums I ever bought. Janet is, of course, up there, but I would say Lauryn Hill.
Jacob: No, I don't really like a lot of female artists. I don't have anybody that comes to mind.

FAVE CD:

Trevor: That's so hard. Wow. This is too hard!
Ashley: Thriller by Michael Jackson.
Erik-Michael: 112's new one.
Dan: Maxwell, his Unplugged CD. It's a reall good live CD. It's really heartfelt and has really touching lyrics. I enjoy that CD.
Jacob: DC Talk: Greatest Hits.

FAVE TV ACTOR:

Trevor: He's not really an actor, but on Whose Line Is It Anyway? I like Wayne Brady. He is hilarious.
Ashley:Jerry Seinfeld.
Erik-Michael: I was a really big fan of Seinfeld. But it's not there anymore, so I don't really watch TV. But I'm going to say that Homer Simpson is my favorite television actor.
Jacob: Matt Perry from Friends.

FAVE TV ACTRESS:

Trevor: Tiffani Thiessen. Meeting Tiffani making "Liquid Dreams" was the greatest day of my life. She thought I was psycho because I know so much trivia about Saved By the Bell because I watched it so many times.
Ashley: Jennifer Aniston.
Jacob: I only watch Friends. I'd have to say Jennifer Aniston.

FAVE TV SHOW:

Trevor: Well, my favorite TV show is Saved By the Bell. I love it. I'm a nut.
Ashley: Friends.
Erik-Michael: The Simpsons.
Dan: I don't watch much TV, so I have no favorite actors. But my favorite TV show is Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
Jacob: Friends. That and Behind the Music are the only shows I watch. But that has no cast. [Laughs] We can't ever make time to watch TV shows-when we catch them, we catch them.

Trevor: Denzel Washington.
Ashley: Brad Pitt.
Erik-Michael: Mark Wahlberg.
Dan: Jim Carrey, Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.

FAVE MOVIE ACTRESS:

Trevor: Charlize Theron.Ashley: Julia Roberts.
Erik-Michael: I don't have any.
Dan: Meg Ryan.

FAVE MOVIE:

Trevor: Remember the Titans. But if they had a documentary on the life of Will Smith, I'd love to play him.
Ashley: Star Wars.
Erik-Michael: I don't have one. I haven't gone to the movies in so long. I'd love to play the Tom Cruise part in Mission: Impossible.
Dan: Dumb and Dumber. That's the best movie ever. I have tons of DVDs downstairs and Dumb and Dumber is the only one I can put in all the time and watch. I can not put in, let's say, Armageddon, which is a great movie but one you can't put in everyday. you can only put in Dumb and Dumber every day. Acting, I'd want to play Michael Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream. I'd want to be in that movie somehow. It's my favorite. I can recite you many of the lines from that movie!
Jacob: I haven't seen anything in a while. I saw Blow. That was the coolest movie I've seen in a while. We see airplane movies. American History X-that's a great film.
