Popstar! November 2000
1. Really, did you guys audition for Otown to be famous or because
you love music?
TREVOR: I think all the way around it was because of music. None of us
knew it was for a television show. We all thought we were just auditioning for
a band. Our ultimate goal was just to be in a band.
2. Was there ever a time that you felt your privacy was being invaded
because you were on national television?
JACOB: Every single day, every single day. I was like, "Oh, my
God!" But you just try to kind of get used to it. [Ice cream arrives for
the group, shouts of joy ensue]
3. Did you ever have to cut down on habits that were to obscene for the
world to see?
TREVOR: Let's just say we had our private time.
ASHLEY: We had our private time, but not really. For the most part, we
were totally ourselves. Of course, we're not going to walk around naked.
ERIK: Yeah, I sleep naked, but I didn't on the show
ASHLEY: I used to sleep in my underwear, but I slept in shorts. I didn't
want to be in my underwear walking around on camera.
4. Did you have any regrets about anything on camera being filmed?
DAN: I think that if you're regreting anything you did, you'd be caught
up in a lot of stuff. We're all proud of what we did, and we don't have any
regrets. If you worry about that, if adds a whole other dimension to everything
else that goes on. And that's not good.
TREVOR: I regret being naked on camera.
5. How did you feel about that rat Jay basically saying that they would
rather you not have girlfriends?
ERIK: Well, that was misquoted. I was taken out of context. He basically
told us that he defies us to have the ability to keep a girlfriend. Not that he
prefers us not to, because he really doesn't have a place to say that. He just
basically told us and he was brutally honest. He wasn't going to sit there and
say that it was going to be easy for us to keep a girlfriend. We looked at is
as each individual has to make his own decision and only the individual
themselves know their feelings and the level of feelings that they have for a
certain person. And if they decide to keep those feelings alive, uh, whatever.
6. Ashley, about Shelli...?
ASHLEY: She's an awesome person and we're friends. But right now, it's
so difficult to try and be a good boyfriend. We can't be good boyfriends right
now.
7. Would you ever date a fan?
ERIK: Yeah-if I find someone that likes me for me and happens to like my
music, but my music is not their first priority. But they need to have their
own life and their own way of dealing with it. I'll consider dating a fan of my
music, but not a fanatic.
TREVOR: I would if she likes me for me, and not because I look like
Leonardo. [laughs]
8. What's the nicest thing you've ever done for a girl?
DAN: I wasn't going to be able to be there for her birthday later, so I
wrote little notes and poems and things. I left one on her car, I left one at
her work and left one where she gets her hair cut. I got a key to her house
from her roomate and left one there, so when she got home, she found another
one. I took her out to dinner that night and I slipped one to the waiter to put
in her menu, so when she opened up her menu, she got another one. I thought
that was pretty smooth.
-Who can top that?
ASHLEY: I can!
TREVOR: Why didn't you guys go last? [Laughs] I took a girl out to
dinner! That's it! [All Laugh]
ASHLEY: Okay, the nicest thing I probably did was for Shelli. I took her
to my senior prom and I used to do voice acting for Sega and PlayStation games.
So I had access to this recording studio and I was friends with all of the
people there. I got this idea the day before the prom. I had this song that I
had written for her that I wanted to record that she hadn't heard yet. So I
went in, and in four hours I slammed this song together on keyboard and added
strings and some bass. I burned it onto a CD and when we were there at the
prom, she goes to use the bathroom and I slip it up to the DJ and I say,
"Put this in like three songs from now." When it came on, I walked up
and walked up and just grabbed the mike. All of a sudden I was like, " I
wrote this song for my date," and I kind of gave a little speech. But the
cool thing was, when it started playing, everybody realized it was a song I
wrote for her. So my entire junior and senior class just crowded around in one
circle and we had the whole dance floor to ourselves, just dancing to this slow
dance that I had written just for her. It was really cool.
-Do any of you other guys have anything?
JACOB: No. [Laughs]
9. Jacob, do you paint your fingernails?
JACOB: Why, yes I do.
-It's a very excellent, thorough job.
JACOB: Thank you, man!
10. Is it hard for you being away from family and friends while staying in
Orlando?
TREVOR: I definitely miss home a lot. I just miss the little things,
though. I miss walking to class, just little things like that. Those are what
bother me the most and at least when I do go home, I feel like I'm at home, not
like I'm coming back. It's a good feeling to go home.
11. Ashley and Jacob: It has been rumored that you freely give out your
Yahoo screen names and have started a Yahoo club. Is this true?
JACOB: Actually, somebody went under the name, what is it? Kramer
Productions. He mailed a letter to Ashley from me saying, "Dear Friends,
thanks for all your support." I'm like, "What? Who is this guy?"
So we wrote a letter back to him. First fo all, Jacob doesn't have AOL-I don't
even look at the computer, I don't know how to turn it on. Second of all, he'd
never start off a sentence with "dear friends."
ASHELY: You know how to turn a computer on.
JACOB: If it's on, I know how to push the buttons. [All laugh]
12. Do you guys ever get tired of eachother?
TREVOR: I think a lot of the time, right when we're getting really sick
of eachother, we usually have a nice little break to go home for a while.
13. Which one of you is the biggest prankster?
ASHLEY: Trevor has pulled the niftiest pranks so far. He leaned a trashcan
full of water against my hotel door so that it would run and spill all over the
feet when you opened it. And then knocked on my door and ran.
14. Were you guys ever into boy bands?
TREVOR: I was a big fan of AJ form the Backstreet Boys before all this
happened. When I first met him, it was more like shock. I was like a fan, like,
"Oh, my God!" Now I see him all the time and it's cool. It's kind of
like being friends with him.
15. What is your favorite cologne to wear?
TREVOR: Erik is Polo Sport. Jacob is Clinique Happy for Men. Ashley is
Perry Ellis. Dan is Tommy. Trevor is Versace Dreamer.
16. Boxers or briefs?
TREVOR: Erik is boxer-briefs. Jacob is also boxer-briefs. Ashley is
tightie whities.
ASHELY: No!
ALL: He is briefs!
TREVOR: Yeah, you've got those green ones. You've got those green
tighties.
ASHLEY: I wear briefs more than I wear boxer-briefs...but I do wear
boxer-briefs.
ERIK: He's definitely a brief!
TREVOR: Dan is a boxer-brief. And if I'm in the gym or something, I'm
boxer-briefs. But if I'm kicking casual, I'm commando-style with nothing. [All
laugh]
17. For Ashley: Since your name can also be used for a girl, have you ever
had any funny things happen to you because of that?
ASHELY: Yeah, like sometimes I'll subscribe to something and it will
come back, "Ms. Ashley Angel," or whatever. But that's cool. I don't
care. It's different. I was named after a character in 'Gone With the Wind.'
His name was Ashley Wilkes. He was this Southern hunk character.
TREVOR: Just like Ashley.
DAN: The hunk, the heartthrob!
ASHLEY: No, no, no!
18. How tall are you?
TREVOR: Ashley is about six feet. Dan is six foot. Trevor is about six
foot, half inch. Erik is about six foot, half inch. Jacob is 5'10" and a
half.
19. Do you have any pets?
TREVOR: I do, but Ashley's our pet. We have to watch over him.
20. What is your ideal dream date?
TREVOR: My ideal dream date is...I think it would have to be somewhere
where it's very green, like a forest. I know me and Ashley have the same one. I
would take her out on a blanket and a nice picnic, wine, champangne. Ashley has
the same-right, Ash?
ASHLEY: Yeah, pretty much. Just be outside, something exotic and pretty.
TREVOR: With a great view.
ASHELY: Something like from 'What Dreams May Come.'
ALL: Yeah!
TREVOR: Definitely a view like that, except Ashley would have his guitar
with him and he'd be playing music and stuff.
ASHELY: Exactly! I'm like a hopeless romantic.
DAN: This is a long-shot, but if I had the ideal situation, I'd want to
take somebody to Italy and be in Italy, go through the streets in a gondola,
the street lights in the background with somebody that I cared about. Maybe a
nice dinner, just hanging out.
JACOB: No comment. I don't like that question.
TREVOR: But you've answered it before.
JACOB: I know, but I'm done answering that question.
ERIK: Dan took my answer, but that's alright. There's other places that
are exotic. I like Rome, Italy. It's just a living painting, there's romance in
the air. Maybe someplace like Greece or one of those Mediterranean cities. It's
deep there. And be able to be there with someone who apprecitates art as much
as I do, and be able to absorb everything that the environment has to offer.
Everything-the people, the architecture, the art, that's my favorite thing.
21. What are three things you could absolutely not live without?
JACOB: Music, God and family.
ALL: Good answer!
