David and His Mighty Men
After David killed the giant Goliath, he became very
famous in all of Israel. All the people loved him. David
became a great warrior and God gave him many victories over
Israel's enemies. Now Saul, who was the King of Israel,
became very jealous of David. To make matters worse, the
people sang a song about David that went like this: "Saul
has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands!"
Saul became so jealous that he hated David and tried to
kill him. David fled to a cave to hide from Saul. Some of
David's friends joined him in the cave. These men were
also mighty warriors. These men, about 400 of them, made
David their leader. They lived in the cave together and God
blessed them. This group of outcasts became known as 'David
and his mighty men.' Later, after King Saul died, David
became the King of Israel. David and his mighty men lived
in Israel and were good friends for a long time.
