What is a mailing list?

A mailing list is where  you can read (and/or post) emails from people that have the same interests as you  -- A community, a club.

A mailing list is not like a newsgroup or UseNet. If you post to Newsgroups using your private email address, you run the risk of being spammed (junk mail) by advertisers.

If you join an Yahoo! Groups community ( or mailing list) you will not be spammed by advertisers.

When you join a mailing list, you will receive emails (or posts) from the other members of the list. You don't have to post any emails when you join a list. You can choose to just read the posts from the other members. If you do choose to read (and not post any comments) you are called a 'lurker'.

On Yahoo! Groups, I belong to two Bee Gees related mailing lists - RingsAroundTheMoon (women only) & Keppel_Road . The other great mailing list that I belong to is "Words & Music" - Fans of the Brothers Gibb. This is an independently run mailing list and is not a Yahoo! Groups community.

Although I am no longer a member (due to lack of time), two another great Bee Gees communities on Yahoo! Groups are Now_Voyager (dedicated to Barry Gibb) &  brothersgibb (safe for kids).

All the Bee Gees related mailing lists, are extremely friendly. We welcome new members and will answer any new questions you have regarding the Bee Gees and their families.

How do I post a message to the mailing list?

When you join a group, you will start receiving mail from the other members almost immediately.  Simply hit reply to the email you want to respond to.

For example:

1. If Diana posted to the RingsAroundTheMoon mailing list saying...

 "I went to the studio today, and talked to Barry about the new album, he said.....
Diana"

2. You would  respond by hitting the reply button on your email program

3. You  would then type your reply

"Diana -- Did you ask Barry if the songs "Just in case" will be on the new album?....
Julie M"

 <<I went to the studio today, and talked to Barry about the new album, he said.....Diana>>

4. Then you would hit the send button.

Your post will then be sent out to the other members on the mailing list. You  will be able to read your own post, as it is sent back to you along with the posts from the other members. (In other words, you get to see the stupid typos you might have made - I've made some doozies that I don't care to discuss...lol...)

HINT #1: Make sure you add some of the original email, so the other members know what you are talking about

HINT #2: Make sure the subject line matches your message content. i.e.: A message with the Subject line "New album" would be about the new album, and not about the colour of Robin's car.

HINT #3: Please send your mail in TEXT format only, not MIME or FORMATTED TEXT.

HINT #4: Make sure you DELETE any excess garbage not referring to your reply.

  • Remember there are some members who don't have fast computers and it takes forever to download the mail

HINT #5: Want to send us a picture? Save your images as .jpg or  .jpeg files. That way, every member will see those gorgeous Gibbs.

Also, only send one picture per email, as they convert to MIME, and members without MIME can't see them.

Mailing list Terms

List (abbrev. ml; ML; list) = An online email community or club.

Post = To send an email or reply to another members message (post)

Mail volume = The amount of emails (posts) for that club. If the mail volume is high, then you will receive a lot of mail. (i.e. RingsAroundTheMoon has a high mail volume, so be prepared for lots of reading)

Slang and other abbreviations

For new Bee Gee fans, it can be a little confusing at first on the lists. Some members will post messages using  abbreviations. Here are a few... (anyone who chats may recognize some of these)

lol = Laugh out loud
<G>= Grin (also  <VBG>= very big grin )
ROFL = Rolling on the floor laughing (can be expanded: ROFIBLH to mean basically a bigger laugh)
BTW = By the way
FYI = For your information
IMO = In my opinion (also IMHO, in my honest opinion)
OMG = Oh my god
OTOH = On the other hand
Mo = Maurice
Baz = Barry
Rob = Robin
BGS = Bee Gees (also bgs, bg's; BG's ..ect...)
ISAJ = I started a joke
HDIYL= How deep is your love
SW = Still waters

ect...... You can figure out most of them if you stare at them long enough ..lol... If you are stumped, just ask and ye shall be told! If you haven't already, I recommend you get a list of all the Bee Gees albums, including solo albums, as these are where most of the abbreviations stump newcomers!

To Subscribe to Yahoo! Groups Mailing lists:

1.  Go to Yahoo! Groups, and sign up for FREE membership.

3. Select a Bee Gees group and click it.

4. Click join group and follow the remaining instructions.

5. Set your account to:

  • Single Emails.

  • Digest (several posts in one email ).  If you do set it to digest, you don't receive the images of the brothers that are posted) , but if the picture sounds too delicious to miss out on, you can ask the person who posted it, to send it to you privately.

  • NO MAIL (read from your web browser)

Note* Mail volume varies for each mailing list. Keppel_Road is about 20-30 posts per day where as Rings is on average 70+ posts per day.
