Chapter Nine

Once Justin and I fought our way into the car, only after promising that we would stop singing cheesy 60's songs, JC asked what we wanted to do for the next two hours before the movie. "We could..." I racked my brain to think of something. "Go skating?"

"Okay," JC agreed. I gave him directions and we soon were at Roller Zone. We all paid to get in and got skates. Oddly enough, we all got inline skates. We sat down at a table, put them on, and left our shoes in a pile next to the table. For the next hour, we all skated, chased each other, and even played a game of tag. It was amazing that no one recognized them, especially when they played 'I Want You Back' and all five of them started singing their own parts. Finally, I felt like I was about to die, so I decided to take a break. I got a bottle of water and sat down to drink it. About five minutes later, JC came over and sat across from me. "How's it going?"

"Pretty good. I feel like I've been running a marathon, but other than that, great," I answered.

"Can I ask you a question about Briley?" JC asked.

"Shoot."

"Is she always like that? I mean, really airheaded and well, not there?"

"No. She's usually really intelligent... and she never screws up at work." I paused, trying to think of an excuse. Briley would kill me if I ever told JC about how much she liked him. "Just sometimes," I continued, "She gets really stressed out and doesn't sleep, and it really gets to her. Then, people that she doesn't know thinks that she's an airhead."

"I understand," JC said slowly. "Hey thanks." He skated off.

I finished my water just as Lance skated over and sat next to me. "You okay?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I told him, turning my head to look at him. It was impossible not to notice how close we were just then. Lance leaned over like he was going to kiss me, but right before our lips touched, someone skated by, grabbed my arm, and pulled me up onto the main skating area. After twice around, I escaped from Joey and went back to Lance.

"Sorry," he smiled. "The guys seem to think that they need to protect me and Justin just because we're still teenagers." Just then, an employee announced a couples skate and put the song 'For You I Will' by Monica on. Lance offered me his hand and I took it. After the song, we skated over and started to put our shoes back on. JC and Joey did the same. "Where's Justin and Chris?" Lance asked.

"Chris is trying to show off his lack of skating skill, and he's forcing Justin to stay with him," JC explained, pointing across the room. For a second, we just sat there and watched Justin and Chris. Chris looked up, saw us watching them, and waved. He started to speed up with Justin right beside him.

All of a sudden, Chris tried to do a jump and turn thing, but he landed wrong, which sent him sprawling on the floor. On his way down, he grabbed hold of Justin. This made Justin trip and he ended up flat on his face. JC, Lance, and I, along with many others, began to laugh, but Joey was busy flirting with the girl he had skated with.

When Justin picked himself up off the floor, JC waved him over. He said something to Chris and they ended up in front of us. "Do we gotta leave?" Chris whined.

"If you want to see the movie we do," JC told him.

Lance and I walked to the counter, turned the skates back in, and went outside. It wasn't until we got to the car that we both realized that neither of us had the keys, and it was getting really cold out.

I shivered. "Cold?" Lance asked. I nodded and turned to look towards the doors to see if the other guys were finished yet. They had been stopped by a bunch of girls who wanted autographs. Lance stepped behind me and put his arms around me, to try to keep me warm. "Better?" He whispered in my ear.

"Yeah," I softly answered.

Just then, two girls who couldn't be more than ten years old walked over to us. "Are you Lance Bass from 'N Sync?" She hopefully asked.

"That's me," He told her.

"Really?!" She screeched, then she calmed down a bit. "Really? Can I have your autograph?" She handed him a small slip of paper and a pen.

"Yeah, me too," the other girl said.

Lance moved out from behind me and quickly signed his name for both girls. The two girls were arguing about something when one hit the other and said, "You ask!"

"No you," the girl who had been hit argued.

Lance looked from girl to girl and smiled. "Is there something I can help with or answer?" He asked, handing the papers and pen back to them.

"Ummm... um... yeah... uh... is she your girlfriend?" The first girl asked in a rush.

Lance grinned. "Yeah."

"Oh." The girl's face fell. "I thought you guys weren't allowed to say when you have girlfriends."

"Well, we aren't advised to, but we can."

"Then why haven't you ever mentioned her in an interview before?" The second girl asked.

"It was sort of a recent thing," Lance answered.

"Oh." The first girl said again. "Does Justin have a girlfriend?"

"Not right now," Lance told her. They were satisfied with that answer and they turned and walked away, quietly talking.

We stood next to each other, leaning against the car. A second later, I reached around Lance and tapped him on the shoulder. He looked at his shoulder, at me, at his shoulder, and at me again. Then, he acted on one of my two weaknesses. How he knew, I don't know. He started to tickle me. I started laughing, so he kept on doing it. "Stop Lance!" I gasped out, laughing so hard my stomach hurt.

"No," he answered, laughing at me.

I was laughing so much, I couldn't even get a full sentence out. I took a deep breath and started talking. "Please stop! Lance, come on! Stop!" I kept laughing. "I'm begging you!"

"Okay, okay," He said, finally stopping.

"Awww... wasn't that sweet?" We heard someone behind us say. We turned and saw the other four guys. JC walked around the car, unlocking the doors. We all got in and I gave JC directions to the theatre, then, I reached for my shake, and found the glass empty.

"Okay! Who drank all of my shake?" I asked accusingly.

"It was Justin!" Chris said, a little too fast in my opinion.

"Not even! It was Joey!" Justin defended himself.

"Why would I do it? It was Chris who wanted to taste it in the first place!" Joey argued.

"Justin!"

"It was Joey!"

"No, Chris did it!"

"Or maybe we all did it...." Justin said, as the other two began laughing.

"Okay, you three owe me a chocolate shake..." I laughed, as we ended up at the movie theatre. A minute later we were at the ticket window, me in the lead. "Six for 'I Still Know...'" I told the lady that was working.

"Twelve dollars." I gave her a twenty, got my change, and the tickets. I took one, handed them to Lance and so forth. We got into the lobby and went straight to where the movie was playing.

We sat down and had been for about ten minutes when Justin jumped up. "I need some sugar," he claimed, walking out. Soon, Joey and Chris got into a discussion about basketball, while JC sat on the end being quiet.

I was nervously tapping my fingers on the armrest when suddenly, Lance grabbed my hand. "Calm down," he told me. I looked at our hands and sighed. "What is it?"

"I'm just thinking."

"About?"

"Well, I was wondering... with all the girls you met and see every day, why me?" I looked away from him to avoid meeting his eyes when I got the answer.

Lance put his other hand on my cheek, and turned my face toward his. "Why not?" He asked.

I didn't have a chance to answer, because Justin came in with Briley. They sat down and Justin leaned up to talk to me. "Hey Kelly!"

"What?"

"Hay... hay... hay!"

"What?" I asked again.

"Hay!"

"Justin, what are you...." I was interruped when Justin started mooing at me. "Oh... hay... cows... fences." I said, finally understanding. Looks like Briley had told him after all.

"All righty, Joey's lost," Joey said, talking in third person.

"Kelly, I want to thank you for adjusting the rearview mirror before you decided to drive us anywhere," Justin said, trying to be serious.

"You let her drive?!" Briley shouted. She lowerd her voice. "Are you guys stupid? Letting her drive without knowing the cow story?"

"JC, Chris, Lance, and Joey still don't know...." Joey said, looking from me to Justin to Briley.

"Over labor day weekend, Kelly was driving home from work, she took her eyes off the road to adjust the mirror, hit a barbed wire fence and ended up with some cows in a field. Then, there was a bunch of hay in her car from the field." Briley explained.

I looked up when I heard Briley and Justin laugh. JC, Joey, Lance, and Chris were all staring at me like I had two heads. "Okay, I admit, that was a stupid mistake. I'll never take my eyes off the road again!" I promised just as the lights went down and the movie started.

During the movie, there was the occassional gasp or scream form people in the audience. Our group was quiet until a maid in the movie got hooked in the stomach and drug off like that. Then, I loudly said, "Yes! Suitcase scene!" Just as Justin yelled, "Get her!"

Several people turned and gave us dirty looks, including two girls a couple of rows ahead of us. "Oh no!" I heard Briley mumble. She leaned over to Joey, who was on her left, said something, then told Justin, who in turn told Lance. Lance then told me. "There's two girls named Sarah and Jennifer a couple rows ahead of us. Me and the guys have to do something so we won't be recognized, while you and Briley have to get rid of them after the movie, okay?" I nodded.

Towards the end of the movie, the killer jumped out at one of the girls in the movie. I had forgotten about that part, so I screamed at the same time as the girl in the movie did. JC, Joey, Chris, Briley, and Justin all laughed at me. Lance just tightened his grip on my hand a little, as reassurance.

As soon as the lights came on after the movie, Justin, Joey, and Lance hit the floor. Not literally, but they leaned over in their seats. JC slouched down, covering his face with his hand. Chris did the same, only after grabbing Justin's hat so his hair wouldn't be recognized. Briley and I stood up, putting our jackets on.

"Hi Kelly, hi Briley," Sarah said to us as she and Jennifer walked by.

"Hi," we said together, as Jennifer and Sarah stopped to talk to us.

"Like the movie?" Jennifer asked.

"Well, it wasn't the first time we've seen it, so it wasn't any big surprise," I told her, answering for me and Briley. I noticed Sarah looking at the five guys that were doing weird things around us.

"Are they okay?" Sarah asked.

"Fine," Briley quickly said.

"What are they doing then?" she asked.

"Um, um... they are.."

"My shoes are bugging me, so I'm trying to fix them!" Justin said loudly, his voice muffled from leaning over.

"I dropped something!" Joey said.

Briley pointed to JC. "He has really weird sleeping habits, and in fact, I think he's asleep now." She pointed to Chris. "He's just weird, so I have no idea what in the world he's doing." She pointed to Lance. "And he's..." She stopped, not sure what to say. "Kelly, what IS he doing?"

I thought, then sat down. I took one of his hands and started rubbing his back. "He got really lightheaded from all the blood," I lied. I turned my attention back to Lance. "Breath... you'll feel better."

"Oh..." Jennifer said.

"Well, we better get going," Sarah said. "See you Monday." They walked away.

A second later, Briley said, "Okay, they're gone." JC and Chris sat up straight as Justin, Joey, and Lance got up.

"Wow... it worked..." Justin said, amazement in his voice.

I laughed. "Briley it's a good thing that did work! Me and you would be more than 'N Sync sluts if they would have been recognized!" I then realized my mistake and knew I was going to have to explain.

"What exactly is an 'N Sync slut?" JC asked.

"Exactly what the name says," Briley answered.

I elaborated on that answer. "Those two girls once said that she thinks that's how we got our really good seats last night... that we slept with all of you to get them, because she had seats really far back for the concert on the 9th. And, now, those are me and Briley's new names... at least to those two. But, everyone knows that neither one of us is like that, so no one believes them. On the other hand, if you guys would have been seen, then, we would be more than sluts."

We all laughed as we walked outside. "I'm hungry. You six wanna..." But Joey interrupted Briley by yelling, "FOOD!!!"

"I take that as a yes," Briley said, shutting up when Justin put his finger up to his lips.

Justin walked up behind me, yelled, "I'm gonna hook you!" and grabbed my waist.

I screamed, spun around, and yelled, "Justin, I hate you!"

"No you don't," He said, grinning.

"I know," I said, as the group laughed at me.

"So, is Subway okay?" Briley asked.

"Yeah," the rest of us answered.

Briley and Justin rode in her car, while JC drove me, Lance, Chris, and Joey. As soon as we got in the car, Chris started talking. "There's something I don't really understand," he told us, frowning.

"What?" Joey asked.

"Well, at the end of the movie, Julie gets home, goes upstairs, Ray's brushing his teeth, it's in the middle of the day. Then, Julie gets in bed, minutes later, gets up, it's night time. Ray is still brushing his teeth. That means that he brushed his teeth for, like, eight hours."

"Chris," I said, "It's a movie. Don't worry about it, okay?"

"But I don't get it!" Chris whined. We argued about this until we arrived at Subway. As we got out of the car, Chris said, "It doesn't make sense! How can someone brush their teeth for eight hours straight?"

"Hey, you noticed that too?" Justin asked him as we walked inside.

"Yeah, and it doesn't make sense," Chris said as they all got food. JC, Lance and I were the ones here who didn't eat, so we went over to sit down.

"I need a booth," JC told us. "I couldn't sleep last night and I am really really tired." He sat down in a booth, leaned against the wall, and put his feet up. Lance and I sat across from him. Slowly, the other four came over and sat around us.

I looked at my watch. It was 11:30. I started to pat my pockets. "Shoot," I whispered.

"What?" Lance asked.

"I need to call home, but I don't have any change."

"Here," Justin said, handing me a cell phone.

"You sure?"

"Yeah, go ahead," Justin nodded.

I dialed my number and my mom answered after just a few rings. "Hey mom."

"Kelly! Where are you?"

"Subway."

"With?"

"Briley..."

She interrupted. "Are you with 'N Sync?"

"Yeah. How did you know? Dad didn't seem to think I was telling the truth this afternoon."

"Well, the caller ID came up as a Timberlake, J R."

"Oh cool..." I smiled. "That's weird... it's not registered in this area.... oh well."

"Anyway, you need to have Briley bring you home so they can head back to St. Louis from there. They don't need to make an extra trip."

"Mom," I said.

"Kelly."

"Mom."

"Kelly, don't whine at me."

"Mom," I whined.

"Kelly, do it." She hung up the phone.

I pressed the button to hang it up and gave it back to Justin. "That's weird," I said.

"What?" Briley asked.

"Justin's name came up on the caller ID."

"Weird..." Justin said. "Usually that only happens when the cell phone is registered in the area."

"I know... oh well. Briley, you need to take me home, so that they don't have to make an extra trip."

"All right," She sympathetically said.

"Hey Justin, can I borrow your phone?" Joey asked. Justin handed it to him.

"What are you doing?" JC asked.

"Calling the girl I skated with tonight."

"You got her number?" Briley exclaimed.

"Yeah," Joey smiled.

"I am so not surprised," JC mumbled sleepily.

Joey dialed the number but hung up before he said anything. "No one's answering," He said, handing Justin his phone.

Everyone was almost finished, so Lance took my hand. "Come on," he said, leading me outside so our good-bye could be said somewhat in private. We stood next to Briley's car. "Sorry this was so screwed up," He said. "It should have been considered a first date..."

"It's okay," I told him. "I had fun. Just promise me you'll take me out without the other guys sometime."

He laughed. "I promise."

Our 'chaperones' appeared then, Briley getting in her car, Justin standing by the drivers side talking to her. JC, Chris, and Joey got in the rental car. It was quiet until Chris leaned out and yelled, "Lance! Just kiss her already!" Joey grabbed the back of his shirt, pulled him back into the car, and rolled the window up.

Lance smiled. "I'll call you tomorrow morning before we leave."

"Okay," I said. Lance leaned forward then, lightly put his lips on mine, and pulled me closer to him.
