Chapter Twenty

Lance and I made it to Justin’s in record time. We pulled into the driveway and as soon as the car stopped, Lance and I jumped out and ran to the door. Justin answered after one knock.

“Hey you two! You were supposed to be here 30 minutes ago! Where were you?” Justin asked.

“We stopped to play!” I blurted out as we walked into the house.

“Kelly, your my best friend, but there’s just some things you don’t want to know,” Justin replied.

“No Justin! That’s not what I meant! We stopped at a playground,” I informed him.

The three of us entered the living room to find Alex watching “Scream.” As the end credits began to roll, Alex sighed. “Matthew Lillard rocks.” Justin, Lance, and I began to laugh. “What?”

“That just came from nowhere,” I said with a giggle.

“Hey Alex! Do you Tatum impersonation for them!” Justin exclaimed.

“No!” Alex answered.

“Why not?” He asked.

“Because!”

“Please Alex?” Lance and I said simultaneously.

“Okay, fine!” Alex exclaimed. She took a deep breath and began to speak, sounding just like Tatum. “God, I loved it! I’ll send you a copy! BAM! Bitch went down! I’ll send you a copy, BAM! Syd- super bitch! You are so cool!”

Lance and I sat in silence for a second after Alex stopped talking. Suddenly, the two of us began to clap. “That’s good!” I laughed.

A moment passed before Alex sprung up. “I got an idea!”

“What?” I asked.

“I wonder if JC and Briley could use a chaperone.” She smiled. “Or four...”

I smiled. “Are you hinting that we should...”

“Follow them?” Lance finished for me.

“How do you two do that?” Justin asked.

“Do what?” Lance and I asked together.

“That!”

“Finish-” Lance began to say.

“Each other’s sentences?” I continued. “I don’t-” Lance interrupted.

“Really know.”

“It’s just something-” I began. Then Lance joined me. “That we can do.”

“Freaky...” Justin mumbled.

“Too weird,” Alex muttered.

“So, are we going to keep an eye on them or what?” I asked.

“Sure. Do either of you know where they went?” Alex asked, directing the question to Justin and Lance.

“He mentioned dinner at an Italian place and then a jazz club,” Lance answered.

“Which ones? There’s a ton in Orlando!” I exclaimed.

“There is only on restaurant and club that JC ever really goes to,” Justin explained.

“Okay, in that case, let’s go!” I jumped up, grabbed Lance’s hand and pulled him out the door. Moments later, Justin and Alex followed us. The four of us got into Justin’s Mercedes. He began driving to the restaurant. Upon our arrival, Lance leaned up to talk to Justin.

“Hey man... don’t we need reservations for this place?”

“Oh yeah...” Justin mumbled. “Hang on a second...” He got out, ran to the door and then, back to us. “Come on.”

“But what about the reservations?” Alex questioned.

“I know the host. He’ll let us in,” Justin answered.

We walked to the door and went inside. “Hello, welcome to... Justin! Dude! What’s up?” The host said, greeting Justin.

“Hey Grant! Just working. Hey, do you think you could get us in?” Justin asked, shaking his hand.

“Yeah, come on. Follow me,” Grant said, leading us to a table. After he walked away, I scanned the room.

“Perfect,” I mumbled.

“What was that?” Justin asked.

I nodded in JC and Briley’s direction. “Perfect view.” Justin, Alex, Lance, and I had a great view of JC and Briley. We were in a dark corner of the room so those two were not able to see us. Unfortunately, we happened to be next to the bathrooms.

The evening was quite uneventful, at least until Briley got up to use the bathroom. “Hide!” I hissed to the others. Alex ducked under the table, Justin turned his back, and Lance grabbed a menu to hold in front of us. I peeked over the top of the menu to see the women’s bathroom door swing shut behind Briley.

“Can I tell you something?” Lance whispered.

“Sure.”

“You wear over-alls alot.”

“If you say so dear...” I paused. “I have this feeling we’re being stared at.” Lance brought the menu down to find Justin and Alex looking at us.

The two of them smiled at each other. “What was going on behind that menu?” Justin asked.

“Nothing that isn’t counted as a PDA,” Lance answered with a smile, quickly kissing me.

Just then, Justin spun around, Alex once again hit the floor, and Lance threw the menu up in front of us again. As Briley walked past, he lowered the menu so we could watch her walk away. Alex sat up and breathed a sigh of relief. After a few more minutes of watching and chasing waiter’s away, I slid down in the seat.

“This is getting boring,” I announced.

“Then let’s leave,” Justin said.

So, the four of us headed for the exit. None of us took into account having to pass by JC and Briley’s table to reach the exit. Just as we were about to be home free, Justin stopped walking, making the three of us run into him. He ducked behind a pillar, pulling us along. I looked around Justin and Alex to see JC and Briley getting up to leave.

“Excuse me,” A waiter said to Alex. As she stepped out of his way, she tripped on Lance’s foot. As she fell, she grabbed for something to break her fall. That something was me, who was unprepared for the jerk and fall. Alex and I ended up in a heap on the floor. JC and Briley turned at the commotion.

“Kelly?” JC asked in surprise.

“Alex?” Briley exclaimed.

Not wanting us to take the sole blame, Justin and Lance stepped red faced from behind the pillar. “Justin and Lance?” JC and Briley said in unison.

“What are you all doing here?” JC asked.

“Leaving,” Lance said, pulling me off the floor and ushering me out the door. Justin and Alex weren’t far behind.

“We’re discussing this later!” Briley yelled as we ran out the door.

As Justin pulled the car onto the road, I began to laugh. “That was so close! Lance, that was quick thinking!”

He shrugged. “Not really. I saw it on a cartoon once.”

We soon arrived back at Justin’s. As we walked into the house and collapsed in the living room, Justin asked, “What do y’all want to do?”

“Watch a movie,” I answered.

“Okay. What?” The four of us looked at the rows of movies and soon decided on the suspense thriller, ‘Urban Legend.’ We settled down, Lance and I on the loveseat, Alex and Justin on the couch, and began to watch.

Halfway through the movie, the power went out. It startled me, but I didn’t say or do anything. Alex on the other hand, screamed and jumped into Justin’s lap. We sat in stunned silence for what seemed like minutes before the phone rang, scaring the heck out of all of us.

Justin hesitantly reached out, picked up the phone, and brought it to his ear. “Hello?” He didn’t say anything for about fifteen seconds. “Okay, if you want me to.” He then turned on the speaker phone.

When the caller heard the click of the receiver, they asked in a deep voice, “Do you want to die tonight?”
