Chapter 19
~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~
Two months later
Lance glanced at the clock. 2pm. Ahh. Sleep. How could he forget how wonderful sleep in a real bed was? Contributing to the fact that it had been months since he’d last seen a real bed, a real house, this was heaven. Orlando, Florida. Otherwise known as heaven.
Orlando had things that most other places didn’t have.
Disney World. Beaches within a reasonable distance. And best of all, Courtney. Their “relationship” had only been over the phone for the past few months with only the occasional quick visit from her. But those visits were savored. Each day, each hour, each minute.
He had gotten in the night before. At that moment, sleep was all that was on his mind. But this moment was reserved. Lance smiled, rolled over and grabbed the phone. Smiling with every pushed number, he called Courtney, hoping to see her later that evening.
::Beep, Beep::
Courtney peaked out her window.
He doesn’t walk to the door anymore? she thought to herself. She laughed then. Things were finally looking up. Things were finally going right. Her life was a perfectly pieced puzzle. Great friends, perfect boyfriend… things couldn’t get better. But that certainly wasn’t going to stop her from trying.
Josh hopped in his jeep and started the window. Lance had gone to pick up Courtney an hour ago. Dakota wasn’t home. He’d called… twice. He’d looked forward to spending some real time with her for two months. Sure, she’d come out with Courtney a few of the times that Courtney came to see Lance, but they hadn’t really spent any “quality time” just the two of them. He missed that. He wanted that. Only now he was even more confused as to what
she wanted.
“I just don’t think they’re on the same wavelength, that’s all” Courtney defended. Lance had increasingly continued to tease her about worrying about the JC and Dakota factor. “I know they’re grown-ups, but let’s face it, sometimes grown-ups do stupid things.” She continued. Lance chuckled to himself. “So, you’re calling our best friend stupid?” Courtney gave him a warning look, traced with a smile. “No. And I’m not calling Dakota stupid either. It’s just… I’m not sure they want the same thing out of this ‘thing’ they got going on.” Lance turned half serious. “Seems to me, that they’ll be learning that pretty soon if Josh finds out Dakota’s out with another guy.” Courtney’s light-hearted mood turned serious. “That’s what I’m afraid of, baby. That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Continuing to drive, Josh noticed the rumbling in his stomach.
Dinner would be good, Josh he thought to himself. Rushing through a McDonald’s drive thru, his hunger subsided. He gave up his quest in looking for Dakota. He stopped by the house and the studio and there was no sign of her anywhere. He decided to drive out to the beach. He hadn’t done
that in awhile. Too long.
There he sat, notebook on knees, pen in hand. The wind breezed through his hair, whipping it around into his eyes. He grazed his hand over his head, putting the strands back into a messy disarray that they remained in. Few people lined the beach, but no one bothered him. The sunset had taken over the beauty of the sunny day. Words couldn’t describe all the beauty in this one moment.
He starred down at his empty page. Empty. He started to get up to head for his jeep. That’s when he saw it. The perfect vision. A young couple sharing a walk on beach. So simple, sweet simplicity of a moment taken. Right then he yearned for someone, for Dakota. As the couple came closer he realized he was premature in his wish. For there she was. The girl who weighed so heavily on his mind was sharing in a sweet simplicity moment, hand in hand with another man.
