Generation No. 1

1. PHILLIP (VAN)1 TANNER was born July 02, 1860 in Tenn., and died November 08, 1918 in Weinert, Texas (Haskell County). He married SARAH A. McCorkle (TURNER). She was born 1861 in Tenn., and died November 03, 1938 in Weinert, Texas (Haskell County).

Marriage Notes for PHILLIP TANNER and SARAH McCorkle-Turner:
Recieved this information form Nelda Tanner Marcum on 2-26-1983. She is the granddaughter of Sarah and Phillip Tanner.

Levander Phillip (he was called Van) and Sarah came from Tenn. and moved to Ala. where William Andrew (Bill) was born. Sarah was a small girl durning the Civil War. She told how they hid their favorite horses down in the brakes (timber) and would carry food and water to them. Sarah's mother would hide their money (silver or gold) in the old churn with cream in it waiting to be churned.

Van and Sarah may have homesteaded first in Lawrence, Crosby Co, Texas around 1890. When Bill was a small boy, he said he used to set and watch the catle drivers as they went by on the Chisholm Trail and even ate supper with the cowboys one evening. Van and Sarah then moved to Denton, Texas. Bill and Pearl Mayfield were married in Denton, TX in Dec, 1903. They then moved to Haskell County with Pearl's parents, Alexander Mayfield and Rebecca Higgins in 1904.

Van and Sarah moved west and homesteaded a piece of land near Lorenzio, Tx. and lived in half a dugout. They dug a well after a few years. People began to die from typhoid fever. Two of their small girls died (Cora and Emmy) and when they found it was the well water, they gave up the homestead and moved to Weinert. Farmed there until Van's death in 1918 on Nolan Ranch. Sarah lived with her son, Bill, after her husband's death.

Van was full blood Irish; and Sarah was 1/2 Indian and German. {note from Betty Corbell Tanner - no one ever spoke of Sarah's Indian background, so it is unknown which tribe she came from.}

William Tanner only went to the second grade but was a self educated man. Loved to read and could spell amoung the best. Kept up with history.

He married EDNA PEARL MAYFIELD February 1906 in Fedville, Ark., daughter of ALEX MAYFIELD and REBBECCA HIGGINS. She was born November 09, 1885 in Alabama, and died June 03, 1972 in Big Springs, Howard County, Texas.

Billy Earl Tanner enlisted into the Navy May 16, 1945 and served 7 months overseas duty (abourd ships), Asiatic-Pacific area durning World War II. He recieved an Honorable discharge on Aug 8, 1946.
He graduated from Mattson High School on Jun 1, 1945 from Mattson High School.
