Name: Aloysius Snuffleupagus (a.k.a. Snuffy)
Birthday: August 19th
Astrological sign: Leo
Age: 4
Height: 7 feet
Length: 15 feet
Best feature: His long brown snuffle, used for just about everything, including playing the
snuffleflute.
Hobby: Roller-skating on all four feet.
Favorite food: Cabbage
Family facts: Big brother to Alice; a cousin of elephants, rhinoceroses, and other pachyderms.
Loves his Granny.
Best friend: Big Bird. Their relationship teaches children about the importance of friendship.
This was especially true during Snuffy's first years on the show, when the adult
characters doubted his existence. Big Bird knew his friend was real and believed
in him, even though the grown-ups didn't.
Sesame Street debut: October 13, 1971
Best moment: November 18, 1985—the first Snuffy sighting! After 14 years of slipping out of
view every time a grown-up neared, Snuffy was finally seen by the adults on
Sesame Street. The show's researchers had asked the writers to have Snuffy
discovered. They feared that if the adults on the show continued to doubt Big Bird,
children might get the message that even if they are telling the truth, grown-ups may
not believe them.
Greatest achievement: January 14, 1998, when Snuffy launched Slimey's worm craft into
space with a gigantic sneeze from his powerful snuffle. Future forecast: In ten years
Snuffy will most likely be four years old and living on Sesame Street. His message: This roller-skating, dancing dynamo also
teaches children to overcome stereotypes, accept their bodies, and feel good about themselves.
