~ Chapter Ten ~

"Hot dogs?" Karis laughed as JC walked up to the hot dog stand. He nodded, grinning, and went to the window, ordering.

"You like them, right?" he asked, handing her the hot dog.

"Well, it's a little late if I don't, but yeah, I love 'em," Karis laughed, walking to the condiments stand. They found an empty picnic table and sat down at it.

"What's gonna happen after this?" JC asked as they ate.

"Well, I don't know. We can take a walk or go back to the house," Karis said.

"No, I mean after the summers over. 'Cause I don't want to lose yo, and what we have," JC said seriously. He watched Karis' expression change and tried to read her.

"I don't know, JC. I mean, that's too far away. Can't we just live in the moment and not think about the future, about anything except us being here together?" Karis said.

JC sighed and knew even if he persisted the matter, he wouldn't get any kind of answer out of her. "I guess you're right. Sometimes I think too much."

"It's okay, I like that about you, JC, and I could see myself falling in love with you," she whispered, leaning across the table to kiss him softly. They finished their food quickly and headed back into town.

"There's some shops toward the boardwalk over there. Wanna do a little window shopping?" Karis asked.

"Sure, that sounds good," JC smiled as they began to walk toward the lighted boardwalk.

"Oh my gosh, look at that shirt. That would look so good on you!" Karis said, pointing to the shirt in a window of a shop.

"You have got to be kidding me," JC said, looking at the extremely tacky shirt that was screaming tourist.

"Oh, I'm not. Come on in and try it on," Karis grinned, pulling him inside of the store.

"I am not wearing that thing, no way," JC shook his head and tried walking back out of the store, but Karis stopped him.

"Please, please just try it on. I wanna buy it as a gift for you winning," Karis smiled sweetly, hanging on to his hand tightly as she shifted through the rack of shirts with her other hand.

"Buy me something else," JC whined.

"That's not how a present works, though. See, you accept the girt whether you like it or not, and wear it while the person is around so it looks like you love the gift and I know you love this," she explained, picking out a shirt and holding it up to him. "This one will fit perfectly," she smiled proudly, releasing his hand and walking up to the counter to pay for it.

"You're gonna be stylin' now," she grinned, coming back up to him, swinging the bag.

"I won't wear it. I don't care if it's polite or not," JC said stubbornly.

"Too bad, 'cause I think it's extremely sexy. Guess I'll have to find another guy to give it to," Karis whispered, kissing his neck lightly.

JC gulped, "Well, I guess it won't be too bad. I can down play it a little," he said.

"Guys! They'll do anything to get a little," Karis laughed, smacking him playfully.

"You know it, babe. Come on, let's go look some more," he smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist tightly as they continued down the boardwalk. They continued looking through all the little shops along the boardwalk until it was midnight and they started to close.

"Ready to head back now?" JC asked.

"Yeah, I'm pretty tired. It's been a long day," Karis nodded, yawning. JC smiled and they headed back towards their houses.

"Stay with me tonight, please?" JC said once they had reached his house.

"Oh, I don't know . . ." Karis said warily.

"Please? Nothing has to happen. I just want you there next to me," JC said, looking in her eyes.

Karis smiled, not being able to resist. "Okay, but nothing's gonna happen; I'm tired," she said, poking him lightly in the stomach.

"Of course not. I would never try anything," JC grinned, holding up his hands as if to show he was innocent.

"Yeah . . . right," Karis laughed as they walked inside.

"I wouldn't," JC insisted, walking back to his room. He opened a drawer and produced a large t-shirt. "You can wear this," he said, handing it to Karis.

"Thank you," she nodded, slipping out of her shoes. JC watched as she pulled the sun dress off and replaced it with the t-shirt. "See anything you like?" she laughed, noticing him watching her.

"Mmm . . . yes, a lot," he smiled. Karis shook her head, rolled her eyes, and climbed beneath the covers of the bed. JC stripped down to his boxers and slipped in beside her. Pulling her body to his he kissed her neck lightly. "You know I could get used to this."

"Me too . . . me too," Karis said quietly, smiling in the dark as she closed her eyes and drifted off into another world.
