FACTOID
FROM THE BOG

Sgt. Frank Rock first appeared in OUR ARMY AT WAR #81 in 1959. In 1977 the series was renamed SGT. ROCK as of issue #302. SWAMP THING writer/artist Rick Veitch created a satirical series titled ARMY AT LOVE in 2007.

1:4 The thick, rough inking style is characteristic of Joe Kubert, the artist most associated with Sgt. Rock. ST artists Bissette and Totleben were students of his.

2:1 Sgt. Rock was glimpsed in SWAMP THING #46 page 8, panel 1 during the CRISIS.
I believe that this is the first and only appearance of "Pappy".

3:2 This is the first appearance of Alexander Holland.

3:4 Rock's unit is called Easy Company.

3:5 Bulldozer (Horace Eustace Canfield), Rock's second-in-command, first appeared in OUR ARMY AT WAR #95.
Wildman (a.k.a. Ahmas), the bearded soldier, is also a regularly featured member of Easy Company.
PX means Post Exchange -- generally a store on a military base.

4:2 The Crimson Fokker DR-1 tri-plane was the same kind used by the Red Baron.

4:6 Hans Von Hammer is better known as the ENEMY ACE. He was glimpsed in SWAMP THING #46 page 8, but we'll see much more of him next issue.

5:4 We'll meet this skeletal fellow next issue.

5:6 This is the first appearance of the Claw.

6:1 This song was popular with Allied troops during WWII, to the tune of the Col. Bogey March (better known as the march from the film "Bridge on the River Kwai"):

Hitler, he only had one ball,
Goering, he had two but very small,
Himmler had something simmler,
But poor old Goebbels had no balls at all.

Frankfurt has only one beer hall,
Stuttgart, die München all on call,
Munich, vee lift our tunich,
To show vee 'Cherman' have no balls at all.

Hans Otto is very short, not tall,
And blotto, for drinking Singhai and Skol.
A 'Cherman', unlike Bruce Erwin,
Because Hans Otto has no balls at all.

Hitler has only got one ball,
The other is in the Albert Hall.
His mother, the dirty bugger,
Cut it off when he was small.

6:2 The soldier with the feathers on his helmet is Little Sure Shot.

6:6 The soldier with the glasses is called 4-Eyes.

8:3 While he was a most efficient killer, Von Hammer was a complex character of honor and conscience whose emotions ran deep below his cool surface demeanor.

8:4 Kistallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") was a riot incited by the Nazis on November 9, 1938, resulting in attacks on hundreds of Jews and their businesses and synagogues in Austria and the Sudetenland. I don't know what the skull's connection to that event is. There is a band called Kristallnacht in Alan Moore's WATCHMEN series.

What is the significance of Caesar's scepter?

A Yeti is also known as an "Abominable Snowman".

Napoleon's Foreskin - According to legends and rumors, Napoleon's penis was removed by the priest/doctor who did the last rites/autopsy, and has been auctioned several times. Supposedly it was bought at a 1969 auction by John Lattimer, Urologist and Professor Emeritus at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Pat Morin has some links to more info.

The books are the more notable tomes from the Miskatonic University Library , all part of the Cthulu novels by H.P.Lovecraft. The Necronomicon is a powerful key with spells to open gateways to dangerous dimensions. Unaussprechlichen Kulten ("Nameless Cults") is a book which is mentioned in Lovecraft's works like "Out of the Aeons", as well as in "The Children of the Night" by Conan creator Robert E. Howard. The Sussex Fragments are an attempt to translate the Necronomicon into Latin. Cultes des Goules is mentioned in Lovecraft's "The Shadow Out of Time" and "The Haunter of the Dark".

The Spear of Destiny (a.k.a. the Spear of Heaven) is the legendary spear which pierced Christ's side on the cross. Like most holy relics, it is said to possess incredible mystical power. According to legend, Hitler obtained it from the Hapsburg estate. Supposedly the spearhead now resides in the Hofsburg Treasure House in Germany, although another legend says it has for centuries been encased within a column in St. Peter's Basilica. More info.

Within the mythos of DC Comics, Hitler used the Spear's power to control any super-powered heroes who entered Nazi territory during WWII, thus providing DC an explanation for why they couldn't end the war faster.

10:3 The words on the German document say: "They are there...writings: ...place that...Rhineland...up"
Adolf Hitler truly was interested in the occult.

11:1 Although the elderly Anton Arcane was vanquished back in issue #31, he was a bit more healthy and human-looking when ST first met him in issue #2 (1972) of the first SWAMP THING series.

22:5 The second mask at the top is of Adolf Hitler. According to DC Comics, the Unknown Soldier killed Hitler at the end of the war and made it look like suicide. The Unknown Soldier first appeared in a Sgt. Rock story in OUR ARMY AT WAR #168 (1966). He later had his own series which ended in 1982.

Comment: Yes, you read that right. "Brothers in Arms - Part 2" comes before "Part 1", because ST is traveling back in time.

Comment: Issues #82 and beyond have not yet been reprinted in a trade paperback.
