Kevin is definitely a real country boy. Born on October 3, 1972, he spent the first nine years of his life on a ten-acre farm in Harrisburg, Kentucky. And when his family left the farm, they moved into a real modern-day log cabin on the grounds of a summer camp/retreat. "My father managed the summer camp and retreat center," Kevin told a Teen Beat reporter. "It was a church camp. I was fortunate to grow up there and I had tons of friends, because every summer the camp was full of kids my age and older and younger. I just kind of had all kinds of friends. I met people from all over the state, and sometimes from all over the country as well." In his Jive Records bio, the oldest of the Backstreet Boys states, "I had a great childhood. I loved school, played Little League football, rode horses and dirt bikes, and sang into a hairbrush in front of my bedroom mirror." Kevin got his first set of keyboards when he was a high school freshman, and one of the first things he did was join the chorus and drama club. As a matter of fact, Kevin claims there were two high school teachers who particular influenced him. "First there was my drama teacher, Ms. Betler," he told a Scholastic magazines writer. "And also my geometry teacher, Mr.Lutes. They were characters themselves. They were good -- they made learning interesting, fun, and creative. Mr. Lutes was a minister, so he was a very good public speaker who had a way with words. He could really get your attention in class." Well, Kevin learned about getting attention! And he loved every minute of it. "When you're on stage, you can see people's reactions and that is the greatest feeling of all," he told All-Stars magazine. "That's why we're here. That's the natural high." When Kevin isn't performing, he likes to just be as normal as possible. "I like to hit the gym first, then go and hang out in a mall and look around, buy some CDs, maybe go look at some clothes..." he told BOP! "Then I like to take a nap and probably watch some TV -- just relax." Of course, if the reaction to the Backstreet Boys is any indication--Kevin won't be doing much relaxing for quite a while!
