Record labels insist on introducing more and more clones of the Backstreet Boys, with little distinction between them beyond facial hair patterns. Which is why 2gether is so brilliant. If you don't listen to the words, the farcical quintet--which became an overnight sensation thanks to strategic marketing and its aim of spoofing both Spinal Tap and Behind the Music: The Making of a Boy Band (should, God forbid, such a show have ever existed)--sounds exactly like all the rest of those prefab, hormonal four- and five-part harmony groups. Tune in closer, though: "The Hardest Part of Breaking Up (Is Getting Back Your Stuff)"--the title says it all--and "Sister," in which group members apologize for hooking up with one girl's (very) little sibling, prove that one sappy love song (or R&B-tinged pop song) sounds just like another, no matter what the words mean. With these cheesy tunes, you at least get a hearty laugh along with your fromage overdose.
