The day after they told me I had it, I had to fly to Reno to start the recording of the music and head straight up to Vancouver to shoot it. So really at the eleventh hour, they were having trouble finding the "Jerry" character.
I was actually shooting "Shaft." I didn't have the chance to go audition, so I sent a tape of a tour I'd done with a boy band in Russia.
That was it - they flew me out to Reno the next day, I met the guys and the rest is history.
POPSTAR!: You mentioned the boy band in Russia, which was called Na Na.
How
surreal was that?
EVAN: "Surreal" is the exact word. That was probably the best
description of
my experience with it. I got off the plane and had three bodyguards
immediately, then went straight to a photo shoot in Red Square. "The
thing
that you read about in history books," I was thinking, "I am now
standing in
the middle of with these Russian pop icons."
Na Na was huge - they had five platinum albums. I went out there just to record, to meet them and see if it was something I wanted to do, and before I knew it, I was onstage with them. I was singing with them -after a one- or two- day rehearsal - in front of 50,000 people.
POPSTAR!: Do you use your own experiences when playing Jerry?
Evan: When I get the script, I find out how I want to approach it, whether
I'll
use something of myself or I'll create something else. It's always more
exciting to create something. It's sometimes more challenging, but it
can be
challenging to be yourself onscreen, too. It's like you're saying,
"Hey,
here I am," even if the public doesn't know it. It's a very vulnerable
position to be in.
That's the beautiful thing about acting - it's your choice. You can hide and you can be successful hiding. Or you can expose yourself and sell yourself to the public. That's the cool thing about it.
I got to host "TRL" three times. It was a great opportunity to be myself. It alleviated the questions of which part is you and which part is Jerry.
I love working for MTV - I love the way they operate. It's been a dream to do TRL. You can't ask for a more fun job. Well, you could. (Laughs) I'm doing it.
POPSTAR: Are you involved with anyone right now?
Evan: I am and it's tough to maintain a relationship when you're traveling.
It
puts a strain, I guess. I don't even see my family enough and that
really
sucks. (Laughs) Ever since this thing started in October, we've been
blasting around the country and there hasn't been a break.
At one point I said, "Look, I'm going to spend this weekend with my family, especially since they're all over the country." I have two sisters, neither of which live within 3,000 miles. My mom and dad live in different states, so it's hard to get everyone together at once, unless it's a graduation. I said, "I don't care if the Pope himself is going to sing with 2Gether, I'm going to be with my family that weekend."
POPSTAR!: So - physically and non-physically - what type of person do you fall
for?
Evan: In that way, it's like Jerry - she doesn't need to be a knockout, just
someone with a nice personality who makes me laugh. (laughs)
But to take that into more depth, I tend to be attracted to energetic people, really happy because they're in love with life, they have a drive to do something, to learn something. Inevitably, if you find somebody like that, you're going to find somebody who can hold a conversation that will interest you forever.
Physically, it's always varied. She's been blonde, brunette, etc. My first girlfriend in high school, her mother was Korean and her father was French. She was gorgeous. Still is.
POPSTAR!: What were some of the first things you did?
Alex: The very first thing was "Saved By the Bell." Then I did "Never Been
Kissed"
with Drew Barrymore and David Arquette. Drew was the best ever.
PopStar!: How much of your character is like you?
Alex: It's half and half. Mickey's thoughts are like me - he doesn't intend
to
hurt anyone and neither do I. He's really deep down a nice guy. But
he's
going through an identity crisis and I'm not...I don't think. (laughs)
PopStar!: Do you ever write music?
Yeah, all I do is write music. I write songs about stuff that's
happening in
my life and stuff that I see happening to other people's lives. I try
to
make stories relate to everyone else when I put it down on paper.
PopStar!: What do you think of being in a music group?
Alex: It's a lot of fun singing and I'm going to be making my own album, too,
so
I'll be doing different things. I'm getting offers from everybody.
Everybody
says that I'm signed to Epic, but I haven't signed any papers.
PopStar!: You guys were touring with Britney. Did you rehearse a lot?
Alex: 2Gether rehearses about an hour before we go onstage. (laughs) We never
get
to really rehearse too much for some awkward reason.
PopStar!: Are you involved?
Alex: No, I'm not.
PopStar!: What kind of person are you looking for?
Alex: Honestly, she has to be totally funny, independent, real and just a lot
of
fun to hang out with.
PopStar!: What's an embarrassing moment from your past?
I don't know about Mickey, but when I was in high school, I went to
Granada
Hills High School and I was the mascot. I think that was pretty
embarrassing. I made it myself. I called him GH Man, put a cape on, and
I
pepped up the crowd. I was in every freaking picture in that yearbook.
PopStar!: When you guys got together, was everyone close?
Alex: I think that me and Noah are really good friends. Partly because he's
my age
and we like to do the same things. So we always go out, which I think
is
awesome. As for the other guys, Michael is too young to go out, Evan is
too
old to go out, but when he does go out, he's a party animal. And Kevin
isn't
into the same things as we are. But aside from that, we pretty much get
along.
PopStar!: Have you had any fan encounters?
Alex: Oh my God, the other day I was at a Pink concert. I was chilling, and
all of
a sudden I got mobbed by all these people! They had to send security to
get
me and pull me backstage. And some really cool girl gave me her
necklace.
She ripped it off her neck, and she was like, "This means a lot to me -
here
you go." I thought that was awesome, so now I'm wearing it as a
bracelet.
A while back, I was at a Grammy party with N'Sync, Marc Anthony, etc., and me and Lance walked out of the club and some chick was like, "Oh my God, it's Mickey!" She was taking all these pictures. This goes back to the fact that that they are so untouchable. Everybody is scared to go up and talk to these guys. They are so huge that it's like, "Why bother?" They're totally cool guys, but that's the way it is. I don't know why.
PopStar!: How much of the character is really like you and how much is totally
not
like you?
Michael: Well, I'm 15, so I'm pretty girl-crazy like QT. I think every 15-year
old
is. But other than that, I am extremely different. For instance, the
lady
who played QT's mom, she is kind of a stage mom. She works him, she's
trying
to make him a star. Whereas in my situation, my parents just want me to
do
my thing.
PopStar!: You have your own cancer foundation, right?
MIchael: Yeah, I do - "Making a Difference." The money goes to research and I
started
it in November, 1996. And in September of this yr=ear, we're going to
have a
half-million-dollar endowment set up and it's going to bring a
full-time
cancer researcher to work on childhood cancer research. My website is
www.makingadifference.org.
PopStar!: How is your own health?
Michael: I am five years cancer free. I have been announced cured by the doctors
and
I'm feeling great.
PopStar!: How did it affect your life having to go through that struggle so
young?
Michael: Of course, my priorities completely changed and I really know what's
important in life: family, friends, health. I learned at a young age
how
important life is.
PopStar!: When you were younger, did you ever fantasize about being in a music
group?
Michael: Of course! But this is beyond my wildest dreams. I am living out my
dreams.
PopStar!: You talked about being girl-crazy, so I think it's safe to ask this #1
burning question that our readers have: Are you involved with anyone?
Michael: I am single and available!
PopStar!: What kind of girl are you most into?
Michael: They've got to be easy to talk to. If you can be a best friend with
someone,
then I think that's important, because all of the other stuff kind of
falls
into place, As far as physical looks go, I don't really have a certain
look
that I look for. If someone catches my eye, then they catch my eye. I
don't
really have something I prefer as far as hair color, eye color. It's
more
important if they're someone fun to be around.
PopStar!: How does it feel that you're in pin-ups on all these girls' rooms all
across
the country?
Michael: I don't know...it's flattering. I thought maybe that scene where I'm
wearing
that tight shirt in the movie would kind of not make the girls take a
second
look, because I'm kind of wafer-thin. (laughs) If girls dig the thin,
frail
type, then I'm their man.
PopStar!: Have you been getting calls from people you knew or hadn't heard from
in a
long time after they saw you doing this?
Michael: Not really, because 2Gether isn't really in Canada yet. I go home and
I'm
just regular, ordinary Michael.
PopStar!: Do you get recognized here?
Michael: Yeah, actually I do. It's quite funny. We went to MTV studios and we
stepped
out, walked about five feet and we got mauled by screaming fans. It's
quite
fun.
PopStar!: In character as QT, what is your most embarrassing moment?
Michael: "Well, I've had a number of fainting spells onstage, but the most
embarrassing one was when I fainted and some girl ran up onstage and
pulled
down my pants. When I woke up, my pants were around my ankles. She left
my
boxers on, which was quite nice of her." (laughs)
It's going to be a little edgier. It's going to be a lot funnier, and there's going to be some celebrity guest spots.
PopStar!: Anyone announced yet?
Noah: I'm trying to push for Britney Spears.
PopStar!: Speaking of the whole "Real World" thing, have you seen "Making the
Band?"
Noah: I have - I think that the intent is pretty cool. I feel like sometimes,
I
don't know, I feel they're a little harsh on the kids. I mean, "You're
cut."
I just felt like they could have gone about it in a different way. But
I do
think the show seems pretty cool.
PopStar!: Do you think you could live with that kind of thing, with having the
camera
on you 24/7?
Noah: No, I don't think so, because I get kind of moody sometimes. When I'm
mad,
you don't want to be around me. (laughs) I just don't think it would be
very
fun to have the cameras shoved in your face. I'd probably, just because
there was a camera shoved in my face, do something dumb.
(laughs)Something
that's not really me, but I would just do it.
PopStar!: What are you guys like onstage?
Noah: We're not dancers like Britney - we can dance, but we're not, you
know...it's funny. I think when you're playing something funny and then
if
you turn it around with a lot of seriousness, it kind of bites you.
PopStar!: MTV has taken a lot of inspiration and received a lot of help from BSB
and
N'Sync. Have you guys met any of them yet?
Noah: I met Howie from the Backstreet Boys and hung out with him. He is
really
cool and down to earth. He likes 2Gether. Some of the other Backstreet
Boys
don't think it's funny, but he does.
PopStar!: What's your best acting advice?
Noah: Um, I would say when you wake up in the morning and you think about
acting,
then you've got to do it. No matter what anyone says to you, no matter
what
negativity tells you about acting, you just have to do it. It's going
to eat
at you for the rest of your life. I would also say to do it safely. If
you
have to move to LA, do it the right way instead of moving out here
without
any money or anything. LA can be a kind of scary place.
PopStar!: So...arrive with money in hand?
Noah: Yeah! I didn't do that first. And I got really depressed and wanted to
go
home.
PopStar!: What does that lead to if you don't have money and a support system?
Noah: Starving! (laughs) Which had me eating ramen noodles every day.
PopStar!: The last time we spoke, you said you were single. Does that still
stand?
Noah: Yes, it does.
PopStar!: You've had a couple of months - what's going on?!
Noah: I've been busy and stuff. I think that right now, I'm trying to find
out
what I want to do and stuff. I think being with someone right now
wouldn't
be fair to them. They would be second right now.
PopStar!: Would you ever consider dating a 2Gether fan?
If I knew someone who just went ape for 2Gether, screaming and stuff, I
would always wonder in the back of my mind if they really liked me or
if it
was because I was a member of 2Gether. It would depend on the
situation.
PopStar!: What if they insisted on calling you Chad?
Noah: No, no, no - I couldn't deal with that!
PopStar!: How did you get the script for 2Gether?
Kevin: I came out to LA for a sitcom called "Head Over Heels." It was on UPN
and
short-lived. Then I did a bunch of other different sitcoms. I didn't
get the
2Gether script at first, I just went in for the audition. They'd been
looking for my character for a long time. And finally they came across
me
and they hired me through my audition.
PopStar!: Pop fans seem to love you guys as much as the other groups.
Kevin: Yeah, I know they do, because I don't think there's any real cruelty in
our
humor. We take things to extremes, but by doing that it's imitating or
doing
an impression. It's not really insulting - you can't help but laugh.
We're
not trying to be insulting, we're just trying to show the humorous side
of
boy bands.
PopStar!: How much of your character is Kevin?
Kevin: I think that much of the character is like me. Doug is someone who's a
very
optimistic guy. He has ideas that are crazy ideas, but he remains
optimistic
that he's always an idea man and the next idea down the road is the one
that's going to change his life.
PopStar!: Would you ever think of doing singing on your own outside of acting?
Kevin: Oh, no, no, no!
PopStar!: So you've never fantasized about being in a music group?
Kevin: Oh, I've fantasized, yeah. I've fantasized about being an astronaut,
too.
(laughs)
PopStar!: How do you feel knowing your pinup is in teenage girls' rooms?
Kevin: A little strange. (laughs) I'm flattered.
PopStar!: Are you involved right now?
Kevin: No, I'm single. I'm looking for someone that is, I don't know...she's
got to
be in shape. Someone that doesn't let herself go, because I think they
should be healthy. She doesn't have to be skinny, just healthy. I like
bigger women because I don't think the skinny look is healthy. I think
Marilyn Monroe was the more healthy, sexy look. I think it sends a bad
message to girls to have to be so skinny.
PopStar!: Any embarrassing moments while filming?
Kevin: It's been a while, but trying to dance and I was sweating pretty bad.
And
the girls in the audience were looking at me like, "Is that guy going
to
have a heart attack?"
PopStar!: What's the dumbest question a teen mag has ever asked you?
Kevin: I don't think any question is dumb - I think they're fun. But the most
unusual one was, "What kind of spice would you be?" I said spicy
mustard...I
don't know why.
PopStar!: Are you a big brother to the guys?
Kevin: Yeah. Because I'm a lot older, they look at me and I'm in a different
world.
I'm always having to tell them to settle down.
PopStar!: Have you been recognized from 2Gether yet?
Kevin: Oh, yeah! A couple weeks after the premiere of the movie, I came out of
this
restaurant and there was this high-pitched screaming. I thought someone
got
hit by a car. And I looked up and this little girl was screaming at me.
I
was like, "Why are you screaming at me?" and she was like, "You're in
2Gether!!!" They really go insane. You have to tell them to calm down.
I love fans! I like to have a good time, so I want everyone else to have a good time. I hope our concerts will always have a lot of interaction with the audience and they can do the symbols for "U + Me = Us (Calculus)." Hopefully, the songs that we sing will be a big party. I want everyone to have a good time, that's what you buy the tickets for.
