2Gether again
You loved the movie, now get psyched for the series. 2Gether begins this month on MTV and group members Evan Farmer (Jerry), Noah Bastian (Chad), Alex Solowitz (Mickey), Kevin Farley (Doug), and Michael Cuccione (QT) are just as excited as you are. Maybe even more so, 'cause they didn't expect the show to explode the way it did. "I saw this as a three-week acting deal," says Evan. "I had no idea it would take on a life of its own."
Lucky forfans, it has. The guys have been doing radio shows and recording a follow-up album to the smash, 2Gether: Music from the MTV Original TV Movie. They've also encountered lots of screaming girls--"I was coming out of this restaurant and I heard this screaming, this blood-curdling scream, and I turn around. I'm like, what the heck? What happened? I thought somebody got hit by a car," says Kevin. "And they were looking at me and I'm going, "Why are you screaming, dear girl?' And she's, like, 13-year old and she's just screaming 2Gether...I don't get it...it's a phenomenon. It's crazy to watch."
2Gether have received fan letters and presents galore. "Some people write in and say, "I love you," and all that," says Alex, 20."..I was at a concert and some girl gave me a necklace. She just, like, ripped it off her neck and said, "This means a lot to me and I want you to have it."
So are the guys anything like their characters? Alex says that all of the labels are pretty accurate--except for Noah, "The Shy One." "The only one who is different from his character is Noah, because Noah is definitely not shy at all," Alex says. "Noah is really cool and a lot of fun." Noah may not be bashful, but he thinks he has a lot in common with his character. "I think Chad's really grounded--he really doesn't care what anybody thinks of him. He's really immature and he likes to make Star Wars noises. And he's totally comfortable with that," says Noah, who turns 21 this month. "That's one thing I hopefully have in common with Chad. In the sense that I am really comfortable with who I am."
Kevin sees a lot of similarities between himself and his character, Doug, "The older brother." "The thing about Doug is he's a very optimistic guy, but he has crazy ideas," says Kevin. "It's a crazy idea to be in a boy band to get his family back. He's had his share of downs in his life, but he's always remained optimistic. I can relate to that. Life throws you changes. Doug never thought he'd ebe in a boy band and neither did I. So, try to be open to what life gives you."
As for Evan, he says, "My character, being the heartthrob, I mean, I don't go around throbbing hearts. I wouldn't even know where to start." Even though Evan's extremely modest about that aspect of his character, he does share some of his personality traits. "[Jerry's] intrinsically the leader--he's a little bit more intense, a little bit more work-oriented, focused," he says. "I've got an intense, insane work ethic that my parents that drove into me. I didn't realize it until I got on the scene, doing acting...In acting, you can never be done. So I keep going and going and going until somebody tells me to stop. Usually I'm wasted at the end of it. And that's kind of the intensity of Jerry.."
Michael, who plays "The Cute One," is the only one who doesn't see a big connection between his character and himself. "I'm 15-years old, so I'm fairly girl crazy, like QT is. Other than that, I think I'm quite a bit different," he says.
It's no matter, 'cause all the guys play their parts with great ease and abundant humor. You won't want to miss 2Gether, the series, every week on MTV.
Evan Farmer
on surviving high school
What were you like in high school?
I wasn't Mr. Popular, by any stretch of the imagination, that's for sure. I was the guy who did everything. I was on the soccer team; I did the school musicals. I had a lot of different friends. All of my friends weren't necessarily friends with each other because they were just so, across the board. I had jock friends, I had musical friends...I was just kind of a nomad...
Do you have any tips for surviving the first day back at school?
My philosophy doesn't really apply for everyone---I was just all about minding my own business. I had a rough middle school, so I really didn't like being out of the loop in middle school. I wasn't really popular; I had a couple of good friends. So when I got to high school, I just decided to do my own thing and tried not to worry as much about social aspect of it. And it usually just falls into place, I think...Just worry about yourself and concentrate on things that interest you--not the superficial things.
Who was your favorite teacher?
I had a lot of favorite teachers. I always like gym of course. Probably my favorite teacher through high school was Mr. Wright. He taught the Architectural Drafting course. I ended up going to architectural school for college, at Tulane. He was a big influence.
You say you liked gym class. Did you ever have any embarrassing moments?
I had one year when I had some kind of weird allergy where I got a bloody nose at the drop of a hat. Every sport we played, I would have a bloody nose--every day. So my gym clothes were, like, just stained beyond recognition...it kept people out of my way when I was coming down the field.
So you did very well.
I really like sports. I played varsity soccer all the way through high school. I played sports in college, but not for the school team. I love gym. I just love exercising. I grew up in a very athletic family. My younger sister [Molly] played lacrosse all the way through college...
Are you competitive?
Yeah, I'm pretty competitive, in almost everything I do. I also can leave it pretty much on the field. I don't remember a game that I lost or anything that I lost, or after it was over, spending the rest of the day or many hours, you know, worrying about it. I'm always looking toward the future.
Were you ever the last kid picked for a team?
I was always the middle. I couldn't be the first and I couldn't be the last. I'm a person of extremes, and that was one place where I always sat in the middle. In soccer, actually, I was pretty good, so I would be in the top end of it, but for just about everything else, it seemed, I was in the middle.
Do you still play soccer when you have time?
It's kind of hard now. I still have a soccer ball that I carry with me and I boot around if I get a chance. I love to play...I run, I work out at the gym.
