Pokemon the First Movie:"Mewtwo Strikes Back"
Rating: 5 (out of 10)
Plot Summary: In an isolated laboratory, the first ever Mewtwo comes to life. This powerful pokemon destroys the island and the scientists working there. Giovanni, who funded the reaserch for Mewtwo, wins his trust and trains him to focus his powers. But then he reveals his true intentions to Mewtwo (moron!) causing the pokemon to destry his headquarters, escaping to find his destiny. (Months? A year?) Later, our dynamic trio has stopped for lunch (& a battle) when a dragonite flies by with an invitation by the greatest pokemon trainer to New Island. They accept (Team Rocket intercepts the Dragonite and decides to follow them), but when they get to New Island, the ferries aren't running. With the help of Team Rocket, Staryu, and Squirtle; Ash, Misty, and Brock brave the storm and make it to New Island. They find out that the storm was a test to weed out less capable trainers; that the master's little servant is the missing Nurse Joy; and that the greatest trainer ever is a powerful, ruthless, genetically-altered pokemon. Mewtwo. (Did I mention he is also bent on world domination?)Anyway, Team Rocket had also made it to the island. They stumble on Mewtwo's hidden laboratory and the record of his creation, and they accidentally clone Meowth. Meanwhile, Mewtwo battles the trainers' Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise against his own superclones. He wins and captures all of the pokemon there (except Togepi) in his evil pokeballs. He clones them before returning them to the battle arena. Then, Mew shows up. What follows is a fistfight between the pokemon and their clones (since Mewtwo disabled their powers) while Mewtwo and Mew battle in the air. It ends up looking like Noah's Ark gone wrong-- two of every pokemon passed out nexed to each other and Mewtwo's stormclouds looming overhead. Mewtwo and Mew are still going at it. Ash can't take it anymore, so he jumps between their attacks and turns to stone. ("Fool. He tried to stop us.")The pokemon feel bad, and begin to weep. Their tears restore Ash. Mewtwo realizes that the circumstances of your birth means less than what you do with your life. He and Mew take the clones to make something better of themselves. The trainers are returned to the pokemon center at Old Shore Wharf remembering nothing of the invitation or battle with Mewtwo. And, Team Rocket gets the last word. ;P
Review: Can you say coooooorny? It's a good thing this is the first movie. Otherwise people may be disappointed. It was okay, but it's not very funny. And I was going to put a memorable lines section for the main features, but there really aren't any. Unless you count at the end, the lines that are sooo corny they make you squirm. Like "I was prepared for trouble, but not like this." "Make that double- for me." Just make sure you see this one first.
Something Else: I noticed two mistakes in the dub. First was after they arrived at Mewtwo's palace. One of the trainers says that he flew in on Pidgeotto, and I think his pokemon is a Pidgeot. The second is in the lab when the pokemon are being cloned. Team Rocket is playing "Who's That Pokemon?" and they say one of them is Alakazam, but I think it's really Scyther. You'll have to check the next time you see the movie.
