Pokémon Yellow, (also called the pikachu version of pokémon) is quite similar to the red, blue, and green versions. In this version, when you start by going into the grass, Oak comes just as you're about to run into a pokémon, Pikachu. He catches the pikachu then takes you back to his lab where you meet up with Gary.
The problem is, there's only ONE pokéball on the table. The pokéball has an eevee in it and as you go to get it Gary charges you and litterally sends you into the wall. Gary takes the pokémon leaving you with none, but, Professor Oak gives you the Pikachu he'd just caught. As always Gary challenges you to fight then leaves. As soon as your battle is done Pikachu pops out of his poké ball. Like the in the show, he refuses to go in so as you walk around Pikachu will be right behind you.
The basic game idea is the same, the same towns, etc. But the signs looks differents, the grass (might have been my emulator =), and the pokémon look more like the ones that you'd seen on the TV show. Pikachu looks like the pikachu on TV! Even the pidgeys, rattatas and all the others look like that anime pokémon. But only when they're on the oposit side of the screen =P On your side they look like the normal ones from pokémon red/blue/green.
While you're playing you should keep an eye on Pikachu. You can turn to him and press "a" to see what expression is on his face. He could be mad, sad, or actually like you. It takes a few battles for Pikachu to trust you but after that it's not all that hard to keep his trust.
