"Well, THAT was SPECTACULARLY SUCCESSFUL!" James said sarcastically,
picking brambles out of his charred hair.
His partner Jessie, equally browned, followed close behind. "YOU MORON!
If you hadn't insisted on your last minute HALTER TOP STUFFING..."
"Well I wouldn't speak too loudly, Miss Is-My-Tie-On-Straight?"
"WILL YOU TWO SHUT YOUR YAPPIN'? I was the one who bore the brunt of
your latest failure!"
"Oh YOU hush, Meowth!!!!" Jessie and James said in unison.
Meowth, too tired to argue, or even stratch their faces in retaliation,
stumbled off into the woods.
"Now where do you suppose he's going?" James queried, watching him run
off.
"Who cares? It's late already! We should set up camp here."
Later...
"Jessie?"
"Yes, James?"
"..."
"James?"
"Nevermind, Jessie."
A fan hit his head. Hard.
"Oww...Jessie..."
"DON'T DO THAT!!! If you're going to start something, FINISH IT, DARN
IT!!!!"
"Ohhh, fine..," He said with a sigh.
"..."
"James?"
"Yes, Jess?"
"WELL, WHAT WERE YOU GOING TO SAY?"
"Oh! Yes well...do you ever...wonder what it would be like if we just
STOPPED trying to capture that Pikachu?"
WHACK!!!!
"OWW!! JESSIE!! It was only a question!"
"James, we can't allow ourselves to think that way!! What would happen
if we did?"
"Well, what's standing in our way of happiness, Jessie? It's how we're
always sent out to capture that Pikachu! If it weren't for Team Rocket
we...we..."
"We'd be stuck in some podunk gang in who knows where, hardly achieving
our dreams of money and freedom!"
"But I've been thinking Jess...maybe it's Team Rocket that's been
holding us back."
Jessie propped herself up on her sleeping bag, and turned to look at
her partner. His voice was unusually serious, and his eyes wide.
"How do you mean?"
"Well, think about it! We know we're flunkies and we've convinced
ourselves that we're flunkies who are on top of things, but who are we
really kidding? We've convinced ourselves that we have freedom."
Jessie nodded. They both sat up and looked at the remnants of the
campfire that burned out hours before.
"You..may have a point. Sometimes I think the freedom of Team Rocket is
a cage...in its own way. If that makes any sense."
James smiled. "Is that a hint of low self assurance I hear, Jessie?"
*Whack!*
"DOLT! This is serious!"
Rubbing his head, James nodded. "Ditto, dear. So what do you think we
should do?"
A look of helplessness washed over her face. "I don't know. I
suppose..nothing. Again..what would be our alternative?"
James laid back, and smiled ever so slightly. "Well, who's to say we'd
end up in some 2-bit gang? Sure, we might not have it as good at
first, but at least we'd have true freedom. We can build from there!
We wouldn't have to answer to that demanding Giovanni--"
"--or spend our vacation time being in the middle of a fireworks
display somewhere!"
"Or be forced to endure one of the Boss' karaoke parties!"
"Or clean up all the Meowth hairs I find suspiciously tangled in my
brush!"
James nodded enthusiastically and sat back up. "And we could finally
start scheming schemes to strike it rich! Schemes which WOULDN'T
INVOLVE Pikachu! We would report to no one but ourselves!"
"And we would finally stop wearing these uniforms! I mean red, black,
and white is not the most fashionable color scheme..."
"And we could finally---" James stopped dead. They were face to face in
their excitement now.
"Finally what?"
The look between their eyes quickly transformed--anxiousness in
James'--understanding evident in Jessie's.
"Oh."
"Yeah," James braced for an attack from her, and received none.
Jessie looked at him for a moment longer, as if to say something, then
turned away. "But we can't just leave Team Rocket. We'd never be safe.
They're bound to set out guards to hunt for such valuable and
wonderfully dressed members as we."
"Maybe we could get ourselves fired!"
*WHACK!*
"Maybe, James, if Giovanni's method of firing didn't involve REAL FIRE!
But...there are other reasons why we can't--shouldn't leave. Haven't
we been happy so far? Despite all of the Boss' demands and our
failures?"
"I guess so."
"I mean...when we came to Team Rocket, we were both escaping from homes
where we felt we didn't belong. I think Team Rocket gave us the chance
to belong to something more meaningful. And without it...I'm just
afraid."
James took her hand. "I'm afraid of us even talking about this. I'm
afraid I brought it up."
A snort from across the way was heard.
The slight sound startled the two into each other's arms.
"Meowth!! I forgot about him!"
"If he heard ANY of this..," Jessie whispered.
They tiptoed over to the curled up Meowth, who was, to their relief,
very asleep.
Walking back to their sleeping bags, James shivered away his feelings
of unsettlement. "Agreed. So we're still a part of Team Rocket."
"And we shouldn't want it any other way."
Their minds were racing with thoughts as they lay down. The pressing
question lay on their minds...What stopped them from leaving the cage
of Team Rocket?
"Cross dressing," James answered aloud. "I would sure miss that."
"What?" Jessie asked, turning towards him. He took her hands in his,
again, with seriousness in his voice once more.
"With all this talk of possible desertion, I just want you to know--I
would never leave YOU, Jess."
She smiled at him, rather seductively, and twirled a lock of his hair
around her finger. "You know, James...some of those things we
wanted...I think they could happen, regardless of whether or not we're
with Team Rocket."
He gulped. "Oh?"
"Very simply," she said as she leaned towards him.
James eagerly accepted the gentle kiss, returning it with much
excitement. When they finally parted, he looked into her blue eyes,
shining with wickedness.
"Prepared for trouble?"
"Make it double."
