An Untimely Death

The forest is a vast land, rich and never aging
It seems to glow with life
Green vines creep their way up the trunk of trees
The water that makes up the lakes shimmers as it kisses the luminous sky
The precious creatures of Gaia's forest makes themselves seen when the sun wearies
I run toward the grazing ground of my deer friends seeking company,
my hooves dancing merrily along a muddy and well-frequented path,
breathing the fresh clean air not found outside the wilderness
I have a whole life ahead of me, being but an infant still
And I have worlds to accomplish;
many friends to make, many plants to feast, many games to play
Without so much as a warning, I find myself squirming on the trodden ground
with an excruciating pain shooting up my injured leg
A pool of crimson blood pours from the open wound
as a human and his son approach their prey
Suddenly, the forest--my home--is no longer the vivid land I once knew,
but a dull photograph of a world too good to be true
My breathing becomes labored
No longer do I smell the sweet scent of the forest, no
All I smell now is the sharp stench of my own blood
I wonder to myself, why?
What have I done to deserve such a horrific fate?
I haven't and would never harm so much as a butterfly
I do not understand why my life must be taken
But I have a feeling that it does not matter
If I've ever done anything to offend, I can do nothing now but apologize
In spite of this, I do not wish an ill fate to befall my murderers
I depart this cruel world now, with but a wish
A hope that I will be the last
