Satoshi Urushihara
In my opinion, he's the greatest manga artist to have ever existed. He's worked on Langrisser, Lemnear, Chirality, and Plastic Little. I have a Chirality graphic novel--I guess it could be classified as that, only it's a lot larger than your average graphic novel--and the art is just beautiful. The story's merely average, but I'd recommend it to any great admirer of manga-styled art. Warning: Many of Urushihara's works are intended for adults.
Joe Madureira
Joe Madureira was once my favorite artist. When I began reading comics, I started with two issues of X-Men, then I spent all my money buying Uncanny X-Men. The reason? Sure, the story was fun, but mainly because of the top-notch art done by Mad. He left, claiming that Marvel's deadlines were too much for him to handle. When he left, so did I. He's currently working on his own series, Battle Chasers.
Boris Vallejo
Vallejo's been painting stunning pictures for decades now. I don't think there's a single aspect he needs help in. He seems to have mastered everything of the human anatomy. Every muscle seems to be in its right place. Everything in his paintings looks real--even mythological creatures. Warning: Many of Vallejo's works are intended for mature audiences.
Luis Royo
I know even less of Royo than I do of Vallejo. I do, however, know enough to conclude that he is a great artist. His works are usually darker than that of Vallejo. I just recently bought EVOLUTION, and I must say I had a difficult time deciding on it. I bought it in person, with my sister, so I dared not buy one of the other books (with decidedly more "mature" covers). It's a great portfolio of Royo's work, so I don't regret getting it. Warning: Many of Royo's works are intended for mature audiences.
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
He's done the hugely popular series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Although I don't think he's quite as good as Urushihara, he's pretty damned close. I spent almost sixty bucks buying four Neon Genesis Evangelion graphic novels. I woulda have bought the videos, but they're a whopping thiry bucks apiece! Think that's bad? The series has over twelve parts!
Dan Jurgens
Jurgens does the artwork for Tomb Raider (the comic). I wasn't really a fan of the game, but like most of my interests, I was drawn in by the art.
Michael Turner
Back in the years that I now refer to as both the best and worst days of my life, I saw an issue of Witchblade in a Thrifty's store. I was completely blown away by the art. I bought it, and for a while, was hooked. Soon thereafter, the two candidates for my favorite artist were Turner and Madureira. Just like Mad, Turner left and started his own series. That's when I stopped. Isn't that just great? Both of my favorite artists left my two favorite comics. Currently, Turner provides pencils for Fathom.
Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri
I just love his art. I love the way he shades. It doesn't seem that hard, but I've tried and I can't. Oh well. Maybe if I actually enrolled in an art school or something...Anyway, I don't know that much about him, but I do know he has a series called "Druuna," which is a sci-fi/horror/adult comic-type thing. I wanna get some more of Luis Royo's books, some of Boris Vallejo's, and probably Paolo Serpiere's too. Hmm...maybe when I turn 18...Warning: Paolo Serpiere's art is intended for adults.
