Hyphens

Hyphens ("-") are used to create compound words, which can be used to describe things. They're generally place before verbs. So now that you know what they can be used for, you may ask yourself, "Why do I need this...'hyphen'?" Well, here's why:

Without a hyphen, one may led to think that a man is eating a tiger. If you place a hyphen before "eating" (the verb), you would get a much clearer sentence.

See? Here's another:

Big ass hole

At its present state, it's unclear to what the sentence refers. Is the author commenting on a large hole...or a large anus?


Big-ass hole

In this sentence, it is made clear that the author is commenting on a large hole. While "big-ass" is not an actual word, its meaning is understood by nearly everyone.



Its/It's

This is a simple concept that many fail to grasp. "Its" is possessive, meaning you use it to describe something that belongs to another thing.

Example: I broke its leg.


"It's" is even easier still. It's just a contraction of "it" and "is."

Example: It's just as stupid as the last monkey we bought.



There/Their/They're

This is just like the "Your/You're" issue. "There" means "at some place." "Their" means "someone's something." "They're" is a contraction of "they" and "are." Here are some examples:

He went over there.

You shouldn't mess with their used condoms.

No, it's not because they're stupid.



Your/You're
I can't believe my Econ teacher uses the wrong one. He's a high school teacher, for Zeus' sake! Anyway, "your" is possessive, and "you're" is a contraction of "you" and "are."

Your appearance is comical.

You're a weiner!



Affect/Effect

Here's one that confuses a lot of people. To "affect" is to have an influence over something, while "effect" is something that's used to cause something to happen, or affect something.

The destruction of the World Trade Center will affect millions.

Cannabis seems to cause lightheadedness and incoherency in speech; Baywatch seems to cause similar effects.
