Within Reach

There's a man standing
At the steps of the food court
Across the Immigration building
He's clean and sincere
Tests his ability to see kind faces

"I wana get something to eat
There's nothing less than
Two dollars here"

A passer by hands him
A dollar and hints:

"That corner chicken place
Has free food after 3:00"

"I asked them
That's two dollars too"

"I have nothing smaller
Than a five.....umm....
What the heck
I'll buy you a meal"

Hands over five dollars

Gets a true thanks
Moves on
But can't walk away
From what's happening

"I have five fingers like him
But I'm so lucky
Cause I could have been
A rich man's son
Or in Theresa's orphanage"

The cost of triggering a smile
Of feeding a hungry soul
Of making somebody's day
Is minute
