Special Occasions

I've never known another thought
To cause such consternation
"Save these, sweetheart and only use
On each special occasion."

And every inch of every mile
Of my practiced evasion
Only recalls the same pratfalls
Of those 'special occasions'.

I saved and saved my 'special' self,
But soon they raved about the shelf
I'd put my heart upon, "Because,"
they said, "you can still reach it."

And replied, "Absolved from guilt."
As then I cried "The walls you've built
Just overemphasise if you can't practice it
why preach it?"

And they replied with evil grins
which then revealed their many sins,
"The walls are for your safety, dear."
"Don't be quite so ungracious."

And then it began as it always would;
The dark and the bad versus the good,
And I knew then as I knew now
All hatred is tenacious.

So we'd exchange some not so empty threats
And to one another pay our debts
Of gratitude, when once again we found
We were still breathing.

And even now I must admit
The shoe of guilt quite never fit
The smiling, beguiling the rest of it
True hatred is still seething.

For worlds away I wonder now
Just when it turned to me somehow
To feel I ever could allow
Something beyond the pain

As I know now as I knew then
Not much will turn out right again
When once you look to then avoid
What you had lived in vain

If tracing back to things of past
I can't recall the very last
Time that hatred's net was cast
So dictates little change.

The moments' lost to intervene
And somehow cause the world to seem
Safe, secure, somehow serene
For hope will rearrange

So if you recognise this verse
And family tends to then rehearse
Half-truths, as this their solemn curse
Prepare for great invasion.

Set up your shop and great stockpile
Remember evil shall defile
Reguardless of intentions'smile,
There's no 'special occasion."
