I said good-bye today,
though I know it’s been years
since we went anywhere together,
or had long talks about nothing,
or since you even spoke my name.
I said good-bye today,
though I’ve been missing you for years;
your easy laugh,
the smile that was always apparent in your eyes,
the way you always shared your ice cream with the dog.
I said good-bye today,
though you were unaware,
as you have been many times before
and there are so many things I would've rather said.
I wish I had known.

I lost to Alzheimer’s long before his body surrendered.
