Existence

Minute by minute, I pass
through fire and ice for a sweet moment
of truth before I die.
Grace bears me only so far as to know that each breath
is gone forever
and sacrificed to the gods
with heartbeats that last an eternity.
Such torture is concise to the point of nausea.
When the madness finally takes hold, I succumb with willing lips
and eyes welded shut with days of vigilance.
My fingers curl around the unknown and I am lost
forever among songs of legends
passed from all living memory.
My bones will bear witness,
joints cry out
and brain yield
to the peace promised me
in my years of exile.
So far am I
from the existence of Man!
