Her eyes locked on to a green highway sign, Now leaving Louisiana. "Yeah Clyde. I think we did get rid of them laws." Bonnie let out a sigh of relief as Clyde slowed down to turn on to a dirt road that Bonnie had apparently not seen. "Why ain't we leaving Louisiana Clyde? Do you want to get caught?" Bonnie was kind of worried by this dirt road. "Those laws ain't gonna get us. Besides they're expecting us to leave Louisiana. At the end of this dirt road is our new temporary hideaway, Black Lake, they ain't never gonna think to look for us here." Clyde had a huge grin on his face, he turned and looked over at Bonnie. She sat there staring back at him. "Well, if we're ever gonna make it there, perhaps you should be staring at the road and not me." Clyde looked up and realized he was driving through part of the brush, and quickly turned back on the road. "Maybe if you weren't so God darned beautiful, I wouldn't be having this problem." Clyde quickly shot a smile over at Bonnie. The road was a straight shot from the highway, but it had little off trails that ran off through the brush. Clyde was preoccupied with driving and seemed to pass a few that Bonnie had pointed out. "Clyde I'm real hungry, can't we stop and eat something?" Bonnie put her hand on Clyde's shoulder. "Please, Clyde can we stop?" Clyde slowed down, and then looked over at Bonnie. "How's about a picnic, with a view of the lake?" Clyde pulled off onto one of the off trails, and started to follow it. "That sounds wonderful Clyde." Bonnie was glad they were stopping, they hadn't eaten since before their last robbery. They followed the off trail for ten minutes, and then Clyde pulled off onto the top of a little hill and parked it. Did Clyde lean over and tell Bonnie that he loved her? If so, what did Bonnie say back? Did they try to protect each other from the thousands of bullets flying into their car? What were they thinking when they saw all the cops stand up? Would Bonnie and Clyde have surrendered? This story is based on my perceptions of what I think happened, and what I would have wanted to happen. I don't know if any of this is true or not. This story is just the way I see them going on to a far better place, and leaving the cruel world that they tried to tame. "How fast are we going Clyde?" Bonnie's question was carried away into the breeze as Clyde didn't even look over at Bonnie for about a minute. Clyde looked up into his rearview mirror than glanced over at Bonnie. Her hair was fluttering about, and getting into her eyes. She brushed it away, and then looked over at Clyde, their eyes meeting. Bonnie's eyes glistened like the reflection of the sun off a lake. Clyde put his eyes back on the road after losing himself and his place in Bonnie's eyes for a second. "We're going fast enough to get away." Clyde answering Bonnie's question more than a minute after it was asked. Bonnie now shifted her body so she was sitting sideways facing Clyde. "I can't hear the laws, no more Clyde." She said. "Well, we've thought we lost 'em before, God knows, we've thought we lost 'em before." Clyde replied to Bonnie with his eyes set straight forward, then glanced up into his rearview mirror, and then at Bonnie. "I think we lost 'em this time Bon. Where we're going they ain't never gonna find us out." Clyde smiled and put his fingers up to his mouth pretending to smoke a victory cigar. Bonopened the trunk, and removed a basket of food. "Shoot Bonnie. You're always prepared for the unexpected." Clyde had made his way around to the trunk of the car and pulled out a red and white checkered blanket. "What would you do without me Clyde?" Bonnie grabbed Clyde's hand, and the two of them walked about ten feet away from the car. Clyde set out the blanket, and then waited for Bonnie to situate herself, before he sat down. "Always the gentleman Clyde. So what do you want the ham, or the turkey sandwich?" Clyde hadn't really been paying attention, his eyes were glancing across the brush towards Black Lake. "Uh..the turkey sounds good." Bonnie tossed it into Clyde's lap. "So who told you about this hide away?" Bonnie asked while taking a bite of her sandwich. "You remember Joseph Telivani, right?" Bonnie thought for a moment. "Wasn't he the one who got arrested when we did our first bank robbery? He should still be in jail." Clyde looked over at Bonnie, and then smiled. "Nope, he done busted out. He's been wanted for a year and a half now." Bonnie smiled. "Well, good for him, we could always count on Joe." A slight breeze had picked up and was blowing smoothly across Bonnie's face. "Bonnie..." Clyde started off. "What is it Clyde?" Bonnie's eyes were now locked with Clyde's. Clyde continued "If we make it to the hide away, would you mind being my wife, and starting a family with me?" Clyde kind of turned his head towards the horizon. "Clyde, I wouldn't mind at all." Bonnie leaned over, and pressed her lips to Clyde's cheek. Then took them off, leaving a faint red outline on his cheek. Suddenly Clyde's attention snapped elsewhere. He started looking around. "Bonnie my dear." he said worryingly. "Yes, Clyde what is it?" Bonnie didn't know what had suddenly gotten Clyde's attention away from the calmness of the open land. "Get to the car..." Clyde continued "I think we've been had." Bonnie jumped up and raced to the car, with Clyde following in close pursuit. Bonnie got around to her side of the car, and waited for Clyde. The drivers side door flung open and Clyde flew in. The key was still in the ignition. Bonnie was still frantically looking about, to see what was wrong. The car roared to life. Clyde shifted into drive and smashed his foot onto the gas pedal. The back tires squealed on the mixture of brush, dirt, and mud. Bonnie had been looking out the drivers side window, she moved her head to face forward. There they were, five sheriff's holding Tommy guns. Bonnie turned her head back to face Clyde, she saw more. As the car skid about not catching any grip from the mud, Bonnie kept seeing more and more men appear. The tires wouldn't grip, Clyde was struggling to get the car to move. Soon they were surrounded. At least a hundred men with Tommy guns, no more than fifty yards away. Clyde took his hands off the steering wheel, but kept his foot on the gas pedal. He took Bonnie's hand in his. Bonnie looked over at Clyde. "I love you Clyde." Bonnie pressed her lips firmly against Clyde's. Then gunfire. He pushed her down on the seat and placed himself over her trying to protect her. Bonnie's hand was still clenched tight in Clyde's. Then nothing. Neither Bonnie nor Clyde moved. "Let's go see the carnage boys." Sheriff Cower said in a monotonous tone. Three of the men walked up to the car, which was now riddled with bullet holes. One of them pushed his head through where the drivers side window once was. "Amazing. They never stood a chance." he said. One of the others came and looked in through the window. "Do you think they would have surrendered?" The last one came up next to them and surveyed the damage. "You know someone somewhere down the line is going to look at us like the bad guys." "Why do you think that sir?" The first one asked. "They may have been robbers but they were in love. Look at how they died, hand in hand, together forever, in eternity. It's a classic ending to a romance novel." He reached in and turned off the ignition to the car. The engine let out a whine, and then came to a stop. "Alright gentleman, get some buckets, and you might need sponges. We have work to do." There was now an eerie silence around them, less than three minutes before, Bonnie and Clyde had been having a quick bite to eat, but one of their old friends whom they thought they could trust, turned them in. For what, we'll probably never know the answer, but I do believe this is one romance that was ended due to the color green. If you don't understand what that means, a true friend would never sell you out, no matter what the circumstance. As for Bonnie and Clyde they are heroes of mine. They lived their lives on the wrong side of the law, but in the end they died like heroes, lovers until the end of time. The End essed her lips firmly against Clyde's. Then gunfire.
