Red Haired Girl

my wife, she's a red haired girl

she boiled the Marrin stream

a muscled arm with a roasted feast

narrow face, her darting eye

I lay my head upon her breast

a thunderstorm shook outside!

our wooden hut

the beating of her white skin chest

the money gone, a ranting scream

to break the mighty blue-gum down!

ten days gone to an empty bed

my slapped face stinging

she lies beneath the yellow clay

my near born child at her cheek

the screams of death in a windless night

burning stars, a black ink sky

the morning's blood and birdsong

cutting down the red heart tree

money poured on lonely wine

tossing in our empty bed

my tiny son, the red haired girl
