THIRTY TWO DEGREES

32 degrees south of the equator

32 degrees above freezing point.

Below the river reaches the sea,

An ocean beach stretches without end to the north.

Dark of the sea, pale sky.

Yellow strip of sand

And proportioned pine trees

By the motel room.

Two TVs, microwave and videos

Carpet crawling the walls

Classic scenes of the sea.

A time to rest after lunch.

Then to wake in an hour to the beach,

To shining waves on the river,

And the sound of the cars rolling by.
