A rare beauty, Yukari is the chosen one to bring down the evil vampires that have taken over Damon High School. To tell ya the truth, she has a lot of problems. She is depressed and bulimic. The girl is on WAY too many pills. On top of that, she has had problems with love and friendship, so she stays away from everybody. Gabriel and the tenshi administrators chose her to fight the vampires in Damon High. Yukari often questions why they did so and her purpose in life. But little does she know, The girl holds a power greater than heaven and hell combine. Yukari lives with her mother and older sister. Ryoko, Shizuma, and Daisaku join her in her quest. Despite her huge mission, Yukari still has one more battle to fight-- herself.

    Ryoko is the character that the story revolves around. Her father, Mitsurugi Jotaro, is an archaeologist and is often overseas on excavation trips, so she lives with her aunt, Mitsurugi Madoka. She's the top fighter at her school, something like a celebrity, known sometimes as "The Samurai Idol." Indeed, she tries to follow the ways of the old samurai as closely as she can. She is almost and unbeatable fighter and usually calm and confident in a battle, but can also be a bit vain sometimes. (She has a complex about her height.) When the Drama Club has a samurai role in a play, she'll often help out. Ryoko's love interest is Tatsuya, which leads to conflicts with Kiribayashi Azumi. Ryoko and Azumi have a love/hate relationship; they are something like friends half the time, and fight over Tatsuya or the top fighter position the rest of the time. Ryoko's best friend is Hitomi; Hitomi is her counterpart just as Daisaku is to Shizuma. Ryoko vows to become a great woman by being strong and determined and following the path she believes in, and that is mainly what Real Bout High School is about.

    Hitomi is there from the very beginning of Volume 1, Episode 1. She's Ryoko's partner in crime, so to speak. Hitomi's role in the relationship is often that of Ryoko's conscience, encouraging her when she needs it and holding her back when she's about to go too far. Hitomi is not the fighter that Ryoko is, and is unable to do anything during the battles. She's usually a bit shy and quiet, the kind of person who could easily get walked all over, but Ryoko protects her. Hitomi very much admires and looks up to Ryoko, and is a truly loyal friend. Her character is a good foil for Ryoko. She is Ryoko's counterpart as Daisaku is to Shizuma.

    Shizuma is first seen in Volume 1, Episode 1, though we don't learn his name until later. He is from western Japan, and transfers to Daimon High. His parents, who are musicians, live overseas, so he lives with his sister, Kusanagi Tomoe, who is a junior high school teacher. One of his most distinctive features is his uni-brow, which the other characters constantly make fun of, calling him "Mono-brow," "Monkey-brow," "Sasquatch," etc. He's loud, he's rude, he tosses around profanities and the finger like they're nothing. (Though, as far as that goes, I've seen worse.) He has little respect for authority and often gets too carried away. He's full of himself and even starts a club dedicated to himself, the Kusanagi Shizuma Club. Surprisingly, Shizuma is a very talented musician and can play almost any instrument, though his best are the guitar and piano. (We have yet to see him do it, though.) His best friend, if you can even call the relationship that, is Daisaku; Daisaku is his counterpart just as Hitomi is to Ryoko, though the two are not as close--Daisaku never addresses him by his given name. Shizuma and Daisaku first propose the K-Fight to Principal Todo. Shizuma's main purpose in the plot seems to be keeping the fighting going; that's all he ever seems to do is fight.

    Daisaku is first seen in Volume 1, Episode 2, watching the Intracampus Freestyle Martial Arts competition with Ryoko and Hitomi. He comments many times that he thinks Daimon High is "messed-up," and he's not the only character to do so. Daisaku is a cutie. He's always happy and sometimes even a little hyper. He is one of Shizuma's few friends, and seems to have known him for a very long tim, though the relationship is less close and more formal--Daisaku never addresses Shizuma by his given name. He's also one of Ryoko's biggest fans and is always taking pictures of her, (Sometimes selling them to her other fans!), almost to the point where he becomes a stalker. (A good-natured one, though.) He is Shizuma's counterpart as Hitomi is to Ryoko. Daisaku and Shizuma first propose the K-Fight to Principal Todo, and Daisaku is usually with Shizuma for the rest of the story. I'd almost call him Shizuma's agent. He's always popping up in places he isn't really supposed to be--a locker, the Principal's office...

    Azumi first appears at the end of in Volume 1, Episode 4, when she challenges Shizuma in a K-Fight. She is rumored to have complete mastery of Kiribayashi Naginata-jitsu and is sometimes known as "Saintly Azumi" because she smiles sweetly during the entire battle, confusing her opponents. She is in love with Tatsuya, which leads to conflicts with Mitsurugi Ryoko. Ryoko and Azumi have a love/hate relationship; they are something like friends half the time, and fight over Tatsuya or the top fighter position the rest of the time. Surprisingly enough, though Ryoko is a close second, Azumi is actually my favorite character. She's got a lot of the same problems and goals as Ryoko concerning living the way of the samurai and honing herself and her fighting skills. She's really cute, too--not just her face, but her personality. She's the kind of person you'd want as a friend. She reminds me of Hitomi with a backbone.

    Charming young romantic, Iwane is a dreamy vampire and the clan leader's son. He disagrees with his clan's plans to reclaim Japan by taking up a base first. Iwane falls in love with Yukari and tries to help her win her personal battle. The crew doesn't trust him at all because he is a vampire. Now he has to choose between his clan and the woman he so dearly loves.

    Iwane's older sister, Jo is the clan leader's daughter. She has possession of Azumi's body and uses it too battle Ryoko and Yukari a lot. Jo tries to seduce Ryoko to get her to betray Yukari. She is cruel to her younger brother and kills without mercy.

    Iwane and Jo's daddy, Cain is the clan leader. He wants to take over Japan and kill all of the humans. How to do that? Take over heavily populated place and make that the base. Cain chose Damon High and did so. Now, he has possession of the principal and is running the school and K-fight. Only Yukari can defeat him and his clan. Cain does not take too kindly to betrayal to the clan-- even if it's his own kids!
