As a reporter, columnist, and freelance journalist, I have covered a plethora of varied issues, beats, and topics including: arts & culture, education, environment, exercise/fitness, films, food, health, history, language, love, music, nature, nutrition, philosophy, politics, relationships, religion, research, science, spirituality, and sports.

Recently I was covering the San Benito/Rio Hondo beat for the Star, but I am now the features writer. You can google my full name or check out www.valleystar.com to see what I'm up to there. Lots of my work has been picked up by the rest of the Freedom Newspaper chain across the country and the Associated Press as well as by other news organizations, such as MSMBC, etc.


Daniel García Ordaz was born in Houston, Texas in 1971 and raised in Mission in the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas. He is a journalist, freelance writer and photographer, painter, and songwriter. He is a founder of Art That Heals, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of encouraging cultural literacy in the Rio Grande Valley by promoting the arts and using art to help bring an end to the AIDS pandemic. He is a veteran of the Armed Services, having served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman, and earned he his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Texas-Pan American. He lives in Donna, Texas with his wife, Gina, and their children and continues to write poetry and short stories, sing, and spend time in front of a crowd as often as he can.

His literary work is being taught at The University of Texas and at UT-Pan American.

Daniel was recently a speaker and workshop presenter at the Texas Association For the Improvement of Reading (TAIR) Conference.
