To a Child

Tiny infant, soft and small,
I just can't think of you as tall,
And grown; but grown some day you'll be.
Will you that day remember me,
As one who watched you as you slept,
As one who felt your pain, and wept,
When you were ill; or held you tight,
When you were frightened in the night,
As one who rocked you to and fro,
As one who proudly watched you grow,
and one who sadly watched you go,
Choking back the pain and tears,
Of the love that grew throughout the years?

When you are tall as tall can be,
My child, my child... remember me.
