Emily Dickenson: Time and Eternity

The Original

Emily Dickinson (1830–86). Complete Poems. 1924.

Part Four: Time and Eternity

SWEET hours have perished here;
This is a mighty room;
Within its precincts hopes have played,—
Now shadows in the tomb.

interpretation:
I see this poem as describing a tomb. The first line states that this person's great moments in life end here. It is a "mighty room" because of the meaning it holds within it, it is that persons whole being. WIthin it the hopes of this person have died, their hopes are now just memories.
