Christmas celebration was the burning of candles on the Christmas tree. They were lovely but they were a fire hazard and pails of water were kept standing around the living room to douse the fires that happened. The idea of electric Christmas tree lights first occurred to Ralph E. Morris, an employee of New England Telephone, in 1895. The actual strings of lights had already been manufactured for use in telephone switchboards. Morris looked at the tiny bulbs and had the idea of using them on his tree. Source Unknown |
