Afternoon Delight

Cool, sunny afternoon, all about,
strains of Nature's tune,
lying back against a tree,
tranquilized by the wood's tranquillity,
my eyes grow heavy, my consciousness creep,
soon I am lost in sweet afternoon sleep.
Rat-a-tat-tat, Rap-a-tap-tap,
and I am startled from my nap,
my eyes dart from tree to tree,
then I see her staring back at me.
The woodpecker with crown of red,
beating out a tat-too that would wake the dead.
She looked at me as if to say
"So sorry, I ruined your day
and interrupted your nap so sweet,
but even a woodpecker has to eat.
The delicacies of this tree are so fine
that I could not wait to dine.
Please forgive my rude table sounds,
it is difficult eat quietly with a beak that pounds."
"No problem, my Lady" I reply
"You can not eat quietly, regardless of how you try
and also your Rat-a-tat-tat to me,
is part of Nature's symphony."
