« Our Place - Nagercoil »

The place is dear to me in many ways – my man is born and brought up here, I met him here, got married here, had my college days in this town and my in laws are living here now.

A small and peaceful town with all the required facilities, Nagercoil is the capital and the administrative centre of Kanyakumari District, which lies at the southernmost tip of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. Cape Comarin or Kanya Kumari is the meeting place of Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Earlier a part of Kerala, Nagercoil derives its name from the famous Nagarajar Temple. Kanyakumari District has many tourist attractions, out of which there are many historical sites dating back to 9th Century. Kanyakumari is famous for its sandy beaches and the major tourist attractions being Gandhi Mandapam, Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Kumari Amman Temple. The sunrise and sunset on full moon days are simply spectacular.

Nagercoil is located at a distance of 19km from Kanyakumari. The place abounds in Temples and the famous St.Xaviers Cathedral is at Kottar, Nagercoil. An ideal place of residence, the place has arts/science colleges, major schools, reputed hospitals and all other facilities within its boundaries.

Two years in Nagercoil after marriage is a memorable period of our life. The experiences during this span of time made us better equipped for the life ahead.

Jude is emotionally attached to this place and for him no place holds much lure as Nagercoil. He is filled with nostalgic memories of his home town. He misses the regular morning work-outs at the Stadium, frequent basketball tournaments, the chat with a batallion of friends at their regular spots, occassional movie watching at Chakravarty Theatre, driving downtown in his bike at the maximum possible speed with a minimum of two friends at his back (list is endless)…….

My favourite spots in Nagercoil are Warrens Ice Cream Parlour, Hotel Chitra and Prabhu. I also relish the Kothu Parata from Chettikkulam Junction and the hot “Chukku Kaappi” and Onion Vada from Veppamoodu Junction (says much about my eating habits Huh!). I find much peace in attending the early morning service at St Xaviers Cathedral, Kottar.
