THE WAYS OF THE WORLD

I can see it
in your eyes
and my eyes
and the ways of the world;
every time a city's torn down
a new city is built,
ever higher ever taller ever reaching
ever closer to the salvation of Heaven.
Sometimes higher sometimes lower;
always climbing.
Each time it grips its ascent
slightly more steadfastly,
Advances,
Sometimes serendipitous
sometimes calculated
always by the virtues
of the beauty of Humanity;
By men in black coats with moustaches
by women with tight lipped smiles
by opera floozies
and the gentlemen of the night
by negligent mothers
and dilligent doctors
all always playing their part
and always rising to the breadcrumbs of society
to build the back of civilization
as it advances
its ever reaching climb.

It needs a bit of work I think. In a few places I guess. Perhaps contains some sexism? Any complaints about sexism? Modification can be made. In my defense, I am describing a sexist society. In my non-defense, I've never allowed that as a legitimate excuse for writers of fiction or creative art.
