WHEN I LIVED AWAY FROM THE CITY

When I lived away from the city,
I became okay with the idea of
seeing a mouse caught in a trap;
its fluff-covered neck contorted half-sideways,
its lifeless mouth slightly ajar,
its tongue lolling out.
But now,
I live in an apartment with white walls,
There are no mice.
And the act seems so barbaric, and distant.

Was walking in my apartment at night, coming back from the bathroom, and watching out that my foot did not brush against anything. But thinking that there were no mice, and that it's since I'm in the city. "But now," almost ended up without a line break after it, though the line break is as originally intended. Having a hard time deciding whether there should be a period or comma after "walls". "ajar" originally did not have a comma after it.
Comment from Jeff Anker: I like it, although in my mind I title it “homesick for dead mice.” You’re a sick man.
