WAR PAINT

He smeared green war paint
across his face
Until it would look to his foes
like he had smeared green moss
all over himself
But as he stood there
stock-still
with his M-16 barrel pointed ahead,
His enemies would not know
that though he was young
handsome, and nice,
that back in Arkansas
he didn't have many friends –
because although he was friendly,
he wasn't very outgoing.
They would never know
that he liked to wear cowboy boots
liked to line dance
And taught his younger brother
to play baseball.
All they knew
is that he had a black barrel
beneath the water-dripping trees.

The color made me think of moss and war paint.
