THE OPEN RELATIONSHIP

You asked me
if I wanted an open relationship.
Or maybe I asked you,
I don't remember.

And I can see the appeal,
because there are women out there
with beautiful faces
and beautiful hearts;
the kind that might not be appreciated
by everyone.
And their faces might not be treasured
by everyone.
And they and I could enjoy
having my arms around them.
But a relationship is like a light bulb
on a closed circuit,
burning brightly when it's just the two of you
and your arms leading back to each other.
But if the circuit is open,
the light bulb goes off until the circuit's arms meet again.
And if extra connections are made,
even without the light bulb's circuit being interrupted,
it will still burn less brightly.
And if enough are made until it is dim,
the relationship won't be worth having,
compared to before.
So while you and I might both be okay
with an open relationship,
we would be better without it,
and happier with a closed one.

With my arms around you,
your arms around me
and knowing that
that's how it should be.

After reading it out loud, I considered "With my arms around you, \ your arms around me \ and knowing that that's how \ it should be. "
