THE OLDER KID FROM DOWN THE ROAD

You were the scent of salted caramel apples
My malt of the summer carnival.
I drank from my shake,
Too shy to look at you
through my eyeglasses.
You were the cool kid
from down the road -
three years older
and willing to take
little old me
to the carnival.

What I didn't know
is that you were just too mature for your age
and did not want to hang out
with the immature people of your age.
You would rather hang out with
somebody sweet.

How I envied
the first boy
to make his way
into your heart
when you were in college.

I have heard that you went on to marry
a man who was kind, courteous, and sweet.
And, as I go off to college,
I aspire to be the same.
