THE POSER

You know what the difference between you and me is?
You read a poem by somebody that you know is famous,
and then decide you like it.
I read a poem by someone I've never heard of,
and fall in love with it.
And only find out later that it's by
Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

You say that you're a beatnik
and you're right,
because that's all that beatniks are-
is posers

The "somebody" is Kerouac. The beatniks.. it's a coincidence that they're associated with him. I just view beatniks as posers from what I've seen of them in movies and TV, and that's also how Katie acts. it seems to me at least. Caught up in a crowd mentality and "I want to be cool." Emulating people like Kerouac. What's so great about him? "What Does T.S. Eliot Know About You?" By East River Pipe is a very fitting and good song.
