I SLEEP

I sleep,
and in my dreams
I am protecting you.
But I toss and turn.
I know that something is wrong.
Something elusive wrings my conscience like a cloth,
and I wake,
disoriented and momentarily bewildered,
until I realize what's wrong.
I am not near you.
I am not protecting you.
You have sent me away.
