Fast Facts
Born Anne Dudley, around 1612 in Northampton, England
Married Simon Bradstreet in her late teens
Moved to New World and once there moved frequently
Finally settled in North Andover, Massachusetts
Her husband Simon Bradstreet = governor of North Andover
Raised 8 children in the Puritan faith

Major Contributions

Wrote beautiful poetry reflecting the difficulties of early colonial life, her deep Puritan faith, and also more personal aspects of her life
Some of her poetry = very uncharacteristic of Puritan times
Example- in "To My Dear And Loving Husband" Anne Bradstreet unveils her strong love of her husband, and reveals emotions: both typically were taboo.

My love is such that rivers cannot quench.
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompetence.
(Bradstreet "To My Dear And Loving Husband" in "Selected Poetry Of Anne Bradstreet")

Her poetry contains much warmth and humanity, greatly contrasting typical Puritan writings
She also addresses the hardships of early colonial life
Example- from "Upon the Burning of Our House"

I waken'd was with thund'ring noise
And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice.
That fearful sound of 'fire' and 'fire,'
Let no man know is my Desire
...Then coming out, behold a space
The flame consume my dwelling place.
(Bradstreet "Upon the Burning of Our House" in "Selected Poetry Of Anne Bradstreet")

Poetry published posthumously in The Tenth Muse
Bradstreet = America's first true poet
