Snarling Dragon

As a snarling dragon arching high
Blasts his fire at the darting foe,
So stand and so snarl I,
Breath steaming as it fans out over snow.

As blows to the dragon clash on his scales
And then fall short, back into the dirt,
So blows will falter on my mail;
So stand I and snarl to my enemies unhurt.

As the dragon glares with eyes full of ire
And then looses the flame in a roaring blast,
So will I glare, and then loose my fire;
As long as moths in flame shall my foes last.

As wild the dragon stands in the midst of trees
And watches so that none can come against him,
So wild am I in the midst of foes like these;
So in a sea of enmity can I live and swim.

As the dragon with pure and beating wings flies,
And watches the earth below with mild gaze,
So will I take in my soul to heavens and skies,
And leave the earth to those who love a maze.

As the dragon knows things that man does not,
And pours that knowledge into a treasure that gleams,
So will I coil about beauties others have forgot,
And place my heart and my soul in my dreams.
